We can’t make the same mistake and fall out of 14-17th place. Don’t fool yourselves we’re mid table because we’re not. We spend 33-34 matches of the season 2-3 places above the relegation zone. Time to make decisions on luka right now if he won’t sign a reasonable offer.

I hope Luka stays "big fish small pond". We should be able to match wages with the bigger clubs and will he be a key player there? hopefully this is just contract negotiations.

Parish is normally really good in this area, which is probably helping us get into the position he hasn’t been early in offering Luka new terms, (along with p1ss poor scouting and overpaying because of that and not buying wiser when we actually needed players but instead did so when we were in severe danger of relegation).

For all we know he may have already agreed a new contract in principle. It may be there on the table to sign when he returns from his summer holidays.

Parish doesn't deal with the contract negotiations now, I'm pretty certain it's Dougie and he's been tasked with getting the wage bill down as much as possible. From what I've heard, we gave Luka an offer of a renewal and it was well below what he was expecting. I don't think he was looking for pay parity with players like Zaha, but more Tomkins, Townsend and Dann. It fell short of that I think. Think there's every chance he will sign a new contract but there's always the danger of an offer being considered derisory by the player and burning bridges.

We are an established PL team and if we want to keep players we simply price them at a level where no-one is interested, or if they are still interested then they became replaceable with the money. If a player wants to leave then that is s different story however Luka is our captain, Wilf is our hero and AWB is our youngster come good. As far as we truly know, none of them want to leave and therefore unless someone wants to pay: Zaha £100m they can all do one. All in my opinion of course but it’s time we started acting like an established PL club and not a patsy for the top 6. Spot on mate

Is Luka genuinely in dispute over whether or not to sign a new contract? I agree of course that his value diminishes considerably as his contract winds down but as captain of the club I kind of expected him to be offered decent terms AND for him to want to stay.

Signed a 4 year contract extension soon after Cabeye signed so when press reported he was soon to be a free (last summer) he came out and said he still had another 2 years left. Has since had another renewal so has another 2 years left from now. Think we have done similar with Kelly and Wayne - extensions with no massive fuss. Guessing a lot depends on the agent whether it gets much publicity or not.

This is what these players are worth to us, not necessarily what their market value is. I put Luka at £50m because he is our captain and an ever present in the team. If we slap a figure at that level on him then hopefully those interested would be put off. Let’s face it, he would be difficult to replace for £20m so why would you sell him at that price?
