It is a sad statistic. When one is younger and not yet a parent and perhaps not in a stable relationship, it is much easier to ignore the less comfortable realities of abortion. Now I have had kids, I would find it impossible to recommend abortion to anyone, except in the most extreme circumstances. Politics and religion don't come into it. Yep, I couldn't agree more Hrolf....it pains me just thinking about it.

I seem to remember during my time in the UK that no one really gave a toss about challenging women's right to an abortion. Perhaps some do but I must have missed this, and I dont seem to recall it being a political issue ever either? The latest law in good old 'Bama means even victims of rape or incest cannot have an abortion, and any doctor performing one will be jailed for 99 years - more than the rapist. The idea is to get this to the supreme court where Trump's 2 picks have now swung the balance in favor of the right, and Roe Vs Wade faces a serious threat. I know we have a lot of conservative Trump fans here, but I am curious - do any of you think women shouldn't have the right to an abortion, particularly in cases of rape or incest? Aside from the 'Let's blame Trump for everything' attitude, is he really responsible for this? I thought each individual State made it's own laws for many things, like the death penalty and seemingly abortion laws, going by recent press reports of the variable laws being passed in different parts of the US

If we had the means to abort every baby that was the cause of rape or incest the human race wouldn't have got off the ground. Indeed, there are parts of the world where culturally this terrible stuff is still accepted. However, the defenceless life has no say in its emergence. It holds no blame for how it came into the world.

I also dread to think of some of the people in Alabama who could be raising children resentfully. I doubt that adequate provisions will be put in place to try and cope with the fallout.

If someone is going to destroy a healthy life.....personally the manner in which they do it is of secondary concern to me. People have contraceptives easily available.

The thought of any women, and they’re often young, having to go through the fear and health risks of dealing with back street operators is horrible.

Not sure what this has to do with Trump?? It's a state decision. Just to put the fear mongering into perspective... The Guttmacher Institute surveyed post-abortion women and found that 85% of the reasons for abortion were due to a lifestyle choice. Rape accounts for 0.5% including incest. [Link] In fact, America’s biggest abortion chain Planned Parenthood has often been protecting rapists. Politics and religion are certainly coming into it here. You talk of "extreme circumstances" - that is kind of the point. The religious right here, empowered by Trump, and his Supreme Court rebalancing are trying to make it illegal in every single circumstance, except when the mother's life is at risk. That means such extreme circumstances as rape and incest, are covered in this law as circumstances which do not allow for an abortion. That is plain wrong.
