I wish I had been but a proper awareness of Palace was only just beginning for me then as I was five. I had to wait until '79 for that feeling although the Cup run of '76 and then seeing many games in the Third Division were just brilliant as a kid. Whatever happens from now on, nothing will ever be more vivid than standing on the terrace with scarves on wrists watching football in the '70s and after our first Cup Final and the semi final win against Liverpool, I knew that everything would be an anti climax for someone of my age.

I was there just before moving North to Lancashire. I was 28 at the time and the following year had to arrange business meetings in London to see the midweek games.COYP

Wow, I cannot believe it's 50 years ago! I was there aged 12 with my Dad standing on the terrace under the newly constructed roof of what was to become the Arthur Wait Stand. Thought we had blown it at 0-2 down, but came back to win 3-2 to secure promotion to the top flight for the 1st time in Palace history. The scenes at the final whistle were brilliant and I took Cine film of the players throwing their kit into the crowd, perched on my Dad's shoulders. One thing that really sticks in my mind is the crowd calling out 'Bobby, Bobby' (reference to the injured Bobby Woodruff), to join the rest of the at the front of the Directors Box which he did. That season is one of the best in my memory since I started watching Palace in 1964 and many of the players within that team have often commented about the tremendous team spirit they enjoyed.
A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas! |

Yes, I was there. I had been taken to see Sutton United vs North Shields at Wembley the previous week with my Dad and a work colleague from Mullards at Mitcham. I really enjoyed it and my Dad's mate suggested Palace vs Fulham the following Saturday. I stood in the Old Stand enclosure and became a Palace fan on that famous day. I still have got the 68/69 team picture that my Dad bought me after the game from the shed that acted as the club shop. Have kept the programme too, which included the Football League Review. Bloody hell - 50 years ago!

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (09 Apr 2019 4.50pm) I nearly copied and pasted the above post and entered it under 'ex hibitionist' - could have been me. Just missed understanding The Beatles, The Stones and Palace getting promoted in their claret and blue pyjamas (with primrose collar and cuffs) - saw them in claret and blue only once - when they beat Man U 5-0, and I was a Man U fan at the time, changed two weeks later, but I'm always fascinated by 1968 - 72, nostalgic for a past I was present at but did not notice.

I was 11 and it was my first season watching live football. I was at three games that season - the 3-1 win against cardiff, a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Derby County managed by some bloke name of Mr. B. Clough (who he?) and the Fulham game. I had a complete and utter lack of awareness as to the importance of what was happening.......

Stands as one of my favourite Palace games of all time. Of course we had to make a bit of a meal of it, but it all turned out well in the end, and the comeback from 0-2 down made it even more memorable.

Isn't the reality though that promotion was secured away at Preston the week before when a 0.0 draw and results elsewhere went our way . As we walked back to the station and trannies gave out result round the country massive roar spread down the street. Who else was there .

I was 12. It was the game that confirmed me and my mate Hopper as Palace fans I'd say. As mentioned above, Fulham had Johnny Burn and Brien Dear I think-both of whom had put on weight but still had some class in their play. I remember Bobby Woodruff becoming emotional at the support from us all after the pitch invasion. The claret and thin sky blue striped top is a long way from modern kits: no sponsors and just numbers 1-11 and 12 for the sub, in a time when teams were only allowed one sub per game. Outfield players put in goal happened once or twice per season.
