We were in and around the relegation zone for most of that season, and there weren’t five teams between us and the drop. There was Sheffield United between us and Oldham.

Both teams got 9 points from their last three games.

With three games left:

Leeds 48 finished with 51
Ipswich 46 finished with 52
Palace 45 finished with 49
Sheff U. 43 finished with 52
Oldham 40 finished with 49
Forest 39 finished with 40
Boro 37 finished with 44

Apart from one spell we were poor all season.

Fair enough it was a smaller margin, though it was intended as a toungue in cheek post my bad for not making it obvious enough. We don't generally go a season without the dreaded "O" word being mentioned.

As I understand it a few decades ago when the premier league had just begun, back in the hazy mists of time, we had a similar margin on a team by the name of "Oldham". But many results went against us, and we ended up going down right at the death of the season..... Can anyone really say we're safe after such a traumatic and chastening experience.

It is surely incumbent upon the older generation of palace fans (not me) to educate the rest of us about Oldham and remind us we are never safe until the final whistle blows to signify the end of the last game which would guarantee us mathematical safety.

Fair enough. It gets mentioned regularly and many people have forgotten how close it was because of the way the matches were scheduled: which made it look really dramatic.

It happened to Sheffield United in 2007, Reading in 2008, Birmingham in 2011, and other teams too. A five point gap has been closed a number of times so the teams right above Cardiff are still in real trouble.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

49 points and relegated and nowwe have 39 and are
safe with five games to play.

Says something- not too sure what - about the league now
compared with then.

I get not taking anything for granted but we're 1000-1 to be relegated now. It ain't gonna happen .

We are -4 , which when you think that we have zero in respect of strikers, is testament to how good the defence has been. Obviously the 10 penalties have helped.
Suppose it is helped that we play 3 defensive midfielders, but I think the new keeper , the right back and 2 in the middle have been great.
Need to try and keep them 4 at the club and add some attackers.

If that's the case put a tenner on and it will ease the pain if we do go down.

I can see the temptation but I wouldn't want to profit from that. Plus it's now incredibly unlikely to happen anyway thankfully .

Sorry, I just don't get that.

If Palace are going to f**k it up and get relegated,it will have absolutely nothing to do with anything you, or me do.
Why not make 10 grand out of the situation?

Premier league status secured for another season with 3 games to go..!!

Think 11th is achievable - can see us taking 6 points from our last 3 games.

Meantime enjoy watching the weed in their relegation battle - if Cardiff beat Fulham next Saturday and the weed lose to Spuds Tuesday and the Toon Saturday - real squeaky bum time for the Weed..!!

Could even stomach us losing against Cardiff..!!

Meantime we just sit back in the sun with flip flops on..!!
