He didn't give the ball away because he barely did anything. Wasn't offering himself as an option at all. The worst moment was when he, as the 'playmaker' of the three in midfield had the opportunity to play in Wilf on the counter, and instead chose to pass the buck and rolled it 2 yards to his left to Schlupp who a) is clearly not as good a passer and b) had a much worse angle to attempt the final pass and it promptly rolled straight through to the keeper. If he's not going to open a team up in moments like that, what is he there for? He's looked great coming on when space has opened up, but his performances as a starter have nearly all been poor. Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

Unfortunately he is losing his marbles so consistently plays Schlupp despite the fact he hasn’t a clue how to play CM. Meyer could be quality but he will take 5+ games starting as CAM to really bed in and we aren’t able to offer that guarantee. 100% Agree with this, I hate jumping on players but Schlupp is terrible in midfield, he is such a passenger. He has 1 or 2 moments in 5 or 6 games, No where near good enough. He dosent seem to want to make space, show for the ball or press quickly enough. Meyer/Macca Koutaye and Luca ( who could do with a kick up the arse sometimes).

I may be wrong but I don’t think Roy is involved in transfers. So he tries to fit the players in he gets given.

Meyer is not that good for us. Some fans love him because he is technically very good and looks silky on the ball, however where is the end product? Players like McArthur, Luka, Kouyate are far ahead of him in midfielder terms, hence why they get played a lot more. Meyer is a luxury player, not solid enough to play as a centre mid, not really a wide player and does not work hard enough to play in the type of number 10 role we sometimes play. And he’s tiny. Nothing wrong with that, there are some great small midfielders, but these tend to be the absolute creme de la creme technically, and also very good at shielding the ball and using their strength. Meyer is not in that class. I think he’d benefit from a move away from the prem. A rich man’s Owen Garvan.

Must be quite frustrating for a top player!!

Seeing as you mentioned me.... Roy may not be doing it deliberately but he is on a stitch up of Meyer, there is no other explanation. The whole team, the whole performance was crap first half. Meyer had some neat touches, and on one occasion he harried and won the ball back well, and launched an attack. He was playing much, much better than Schlupp. Second half things opened up and while I will admit MacArthur actually affected the game when it became a but more stretched, but this is EXACTLY when Meyer should have been out there. Once again though Roy stitches him up and hooks him at half time (he never makes subs at half time), like starting him in physical away games. Max Meyer was one of the most highly touted young prospects to come out of Germany in years. Please dont expect me to believe he has become a sh&t player overnight. Hodgson has a lot to answer for destroying the guy's confidence and not letting him get into any kind of rhythm here. The way Hodgson has managed him has been nothing short of very, VERY poor. You can say all you like that he hasnt taken his chances but any player coming from a foreign league, especially one who isnt the strongest physically, needs a proper run of games and some stability. Roy hasnt got a clue how to bed in new signings, except ones on loan that we cannot buy anyway, they start every week. Kouyate should be starting for one. Mark my words, Meyer will leave Palace behind and go on to become a very high class and highly regarded player in the game. He is too good for the way Hodgson sets us up, it completely doesn't play to any of his strengths. So why the F did we sign him?

Thought Aaron Mooy had an excellent game for Huddersfield yesterday, playing in a similar position as Meyer he was far more influential, wonder if he will be available in the next transfer window.

Try reading it again, I said he affected the game. Was his best game in a palace shirt possibly all season, as he has had a very poor season and looks to be past his best in general terms.

I love Jimmy Mac - a great trier and a real asset to the club. Having said that on Saturday he looked slow and laboured and Newcastle definitely won the midfield battle. Not sure the logic of giving him an extra year and improved contract (he was already on £50k a week)as I doubt he'll be anywhere near our 1st team in 2 years time (his contract runs to June 2021 now). Also the offside was poor. Remember a few years ago away v Everton. He did the same thing - slow to come out and then waved a foot at the passing ball that was on its way in. He clearly hasn't learnt his lesson.
