I've been shriven in public on a few occasions and it's not good for your self-confidence

The historical concept is to use up all dairy products today, before the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday) tomorrow. Dates from the time when meat and dairy would be given up for Lent - and you would be 'shriven' (prepared by abstinence) for the great Feast of Easter Day in five weeks' time. I was brought up Catholic and don't remember that, although it does make sense in a way. I have a vague memory that Shrove Tuesday (Shrive) was to do with confession, but then again the whole Catholicism malarky seemed to revolve around confession. Not an occasion that belting out a few rosaries wouldn't solve! Edited by ChrisGC (05 Mar 2019 11.04pm)

Known in other parts of the world as 'Fat Tuesday' (Mardi Gras). The younger Miss YT made pancakes tonight and very nice too with golden syrup and cream.

Edited by ChrisGC (05 Mar 2019 11.04pm) The concept of the 40 days of Lent relates to the story of Christ going into 'the wilderness' and therefore 'depriving himself' for that period. Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras - the day before Lent - was probably just an excuse for gorging ahead of the more reverential period of Lent to follow. I'm not a Christian, but I do read some commentary in our local Parish News, which the church delivers free to all homes. More than once I've read the vicar saying that Lent isn't about 'giving things up' eg chocolate, wine or even 'batter', but should be about a period of reflection on one's values i.e. similar to what old Jesus went through (including being tempted by Old Nick). Sorry about all the edits - my phone seems to be on 'auto-incorrect' today. Edited by YT (06 Mar 2019 10.39am) Edited by YT (06 Mar 2019 10.40am) Edited by YT (06 Mar 2019 10.42am)
