'We cannot 'just magic' police officers'. Really how did the Home Secretary and now PM make 20% of police officers disappear wasn't that by magic? A meaningful presence on the beat and especially at youth level are essentials that Tony and Gordon understood and 'tough on crime and its causes. was a successful policy by labour. But the tories just can't stand that, for them austerity, saving money, are an end in itself. We are seeing the the results now after years of not listening to the police themselves. We need to re-open and improve on the youth centres that have closed and prohibit the carrying of knives, we managed it with guns. But the meaningful presence of police officers on the beat is something beyond value, even in Croydon High St the sight of a police officer is as rare as an osprey.

This is what happens when you put politics first and public safety last. f***ing spot on. The elite's fear of being called racist had led to policy which had cost lives. Madness

I think the tories have been very clever, hoodwinked the public into thinking the EU and immigration was to blame for all our ills so they could mug us off and slash our services, just a shame too many narrow minded people are conned by it. Police, schools and NHS creaking under chronic underfunding and millions trapped in poverty. Now the country is fast descending into a war zone but how bad does it need to get?

I would think that funding cuts and cuts in police numbers have caused a rise in violent crime. However, the main perpetrators of this violence, and the victims, seem to be largely and disproportionately from the black community. It also seems that recent immigration - particularly from Somalia and similar - has meant a rise in knife crime. Plenty of people have written about it and given statistics.

Police cuts due to austerity, when people are being murdered due to government policy, it needs scrutiny. This was Theresa May's policy, a catalogue of failure in her reign as home Secretary Also cuts in school funding No magic money tree unless for the banks (or bribe the DUP) Edited by Pussay Patrol (05 Mar 2019 2.27pm) You very unskillfully avoided all my questions. Anyway let me generally summarize this thread. The lefties believe this is because of austerity and/or police cuts rather than because of people deciding it's OK to stick knives into each other or throw acid at each other (which wasn't even a "thing" until recently). This is despite the evidence that public spending is more than ever as so is the national debt. I would concede here that police numbers have fallen significantly and this is not helping but then again there is the fact that people going into the police these days have generally not even been in a pub fight and have their hands tied by political correctness, limits on stop and search and senior officers more focused on their own careers and our old friend "diversity". The sane majority believe that may well be related to a net £250,000 coming into the country per year (the number of people now leaving the country may also be a clue) and a complete lack of personal responsibility in many "communities" plus any form of shared identify or social contract. It's not just their fault by the way (though it largely is). Our society has allowed and encouraged this. People like you. And the answer to knife crime is to spend more of other peoples money?

You don't get these problems on the streets of East Grinstead, Guildford or Horsham. You don't find large numbers of Indians, Jews, Irish or Poles stabbing each other.Just the black community. You can blame the Tories or anyone else you like however its not them taking 3 inches of steel and shoving it in someones neck.

There was no descent into racialism or obscure left-right arguments such as you see here, with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. They just got on with the job of making our society safer by being tough on crime and its causes. And it worked.
