I'm in the middle of root canal treatment ( not actually in the middle, but have had 2 of 5 apptmnts ). Costing about a tad under £1000 privately.

I look after my teeth now due to an australian butcher dentist in my youth ripping out fillings so he could get paid again ( are you listening Baudry of Sanderstead ?).

My current root canal work in Cornwall by a Portuguese dentist is painless and actually fell asleep during my first visit.

NHS work will only do so much. If you want a really good job you have to go private.

Regarding emergency work. I cracked my tooth in December on the morning of leaving on holiday. I was temporarily fixed up 5 hours later on NHS. The permanent fix is the root canal work.

I can't complain.

I beleive its the same dentist on a different rate generally.
I guess to be registered they have to do x amount of nhs work.

I had a dentist claim I needed a filling replaced else it would break and damage the tooth. I didn't bother. That was ten years ago and its still fine .

I would be interested to hear peoples experiences.

I had the same NHS dentist for 40 years until he retired last year and handed his practice over. He was great I still have fillings he put in as a boy.

Recently I have had tooth ache it took me 10 days to get an emergency appointment with my new NHS dentist. "You need a filling or possibly root canal I can do this in 4 weeks time." But I am in pain I protested, sorry its the best I can do.

I went home in a rage and got the name of a private dentist from a neighbour he saw me same day and said the same as her "we'll try a new filling if that doesn't work root canal." It hasn't and this morning I called and have an appointment 1st thing tomorrow.

This is probably going to cost around £500 for the work and a crown I suspect on the NHS it maybe £300?

Anyway I have always looked after my teeth, 6 month check ups etc but I feel this NHS dentist has really let me down.

What are your experiences?

How did he get a licence so young?

Laura Lynch's practice in Croydon Road is great. Lovely staff.

About £50 for a check up or hygienist appointment but worth it in my opinion.

I need a filling replaced, its got a hole in it.
It will cost £58 for a silver one on the NHS, the same dentist will do a white one privately for £112.

had my NHS dentist In Harborough for a few years now and when I needed an emergency appointment when my tooth broke off I was seen quite quickly and a temporary measure used. I thought I would need it removing as there was not much left but he said he thought he could save it and fix a crown. He put in a temporary one while they got a titanium crown made and it was fitted two weeks later. Been perfect now for two years. cost was intial appointment basic NHS fee .I think it was around £17/18 and the crown £250 the max amount at the time for NHS treatment. Very happy and I know if I had gone private it might have been quicker but would have been around £800. Private costs are now huge and you really a payment plan like Denplan unless you have the cash.
Luckily I can get an NHS dentist as I know its not always easy to get accepted. Last I checked he was still taking new patients. Postcode lottery though!

This strategy is more painful for some than others!

If it aint broke
Dont fix it.
I didnt go for about 15 years until last year.
Only as my mrs nagged me.
I had tons of fillings when i was younger so dont like the buggers.
Thought i may need tons of fillings again.
When i told the dentist you could see pound signs and a glint in his eyes.
He looked gutted when he said
"You could do with a clean"
That was it.
No fillings.
Like i say if it hurts go.
If not keep brushing and flossing and the occasional dig out of plaque.
Job done.

Haven't been to the dentist in 17 years, never had a filling, toothache etc (touch wood).

NHS dentists have to rinse you to make money, it's in their interests to find work that needs doing on the knashers.

Cobblers to that root canal nonsense too, just pay a dental student £50 to rip the f***er out, it's an enevitability at this point anyway, why prolong it?
