I agree with David Lammy and we should respect his wishes that the "world doesn't need any more white saviours" by withdrawing the £1billion of aid per annum that we give Africa. We should also strip Bob Geldof of his KBE .........and deport the clown.

I believe that the general point about celebrity p*** is correct and is being over shadowed by the racist implication. Far too many celebs virtue signal an issue and then leave someone else to do something about it. I have not seen the program nor do I know anything about Stacy Dooley to know if she is guilty of this. However people like Lilly Allen are. She had a day trip to Calais with a BBC film crew wept in the migrant camp apologised on behalf of the nation and then buggered off back home all to promote her latest album. The BBC should also think about this. It decided to send a film crew for a good cause (Comic Relief) well why do you need a celebrity why not ask someone who works in that field and has a track record e.g. a local or a charity relief worker. The media is obsessed with celebrities you don't need them for every TV show and we didn't in the past.* As for helping Africans we need to allow them free trade access so they can export their way out of poverty. Lammy may have highlighted this because she is white but I would say the same about Lenny Henry. Unless a celeb has a good track record e.g. Elton John and Aids *In the past the BBC and others would find an expert on a topic many of whom then became celebrities because of their personalities e.g. Patrick Moore.

I'm pleased Dooley is standing up for the cause rather than the purile comments Boris Johnson of 'piccaninnies' and 'watermelom smile' fame? He's no stranger to unfortunate racial slants and slurs, and so is a bad example to use. This story is the front page of the BBC website so it's hardly viewed as a free pass for Lammy, nor should it be. In life I think when you do a good thing, you deserve to be credited as such. I can understand why people roll eyes at celebrities heading off to the third world, but I don't question how genuine Dooley's concern is or see it as fair game to turn it into a ridiculous 'whiteness' issue and racist attack on her. Her response to it was classy. It deal with the individual and his comments to her. It wasn't used to push cheap racial points in return or to gee people up. That's partly the trouble here. When I saw this article I knew it would get posted here, and when I saw the story about 'no blacks' being sprayed onto the doors of Salford flats I knew it absolutely wouldn't. No doubt there's a largely black forum somewhere where people are firing each other up about that in the same way. Neither take is particularly healthy, but at least Dooley's dignified response was.
