all I can say is change your name, grow a beard
and move as quick as you can. If someone knocks on your door before you have done that and he or she talks Italian then, play dum and tell them that the car you hired was stolen by Juventus supporters

I (allegedly but probably guilty!) committed a speeding offence near Florence in October 2011. I received no notification or additional charge from the car rental company, and no notification from the police.

Out of the blue, in May 2016, I received a letter in English from European Municipality Outsourcing stating that as I had missed all payment deadlines, the offence was now 'enforceable', that the amount owing was 452 euros, and that failure to pay within 30 days would result in legal proceedings. It appears that EMO is used by many (but not all) police forces in Italy to administer speeding tickets and fine collections.

I emailed EMO without response, so called and spoke to a very helpful lady who spoke perfect English. I explained that the May 2016 letter was the first notification I had received, and she agreed to reduce the amount to the original fine of 238 euros, which I paid.

I thought no more about it until reading this thread. I just logged on to the EMO site and found that my payment has been logged as a deposit and 214 euros is still showing as outstanding! I am therefore expecting a further letter in a few years time!

My advice at this stage would be to check whether the police force involved subcontracts to EMO. Go to [Link] and follow the 'police command'link to find this out. If the police force concerned subcontracts to EMO, you can expect them to be hounding you for five years and may be more after the offence. If EMO is not involved, you may get away with it .......

As further advice, never rent from Gold Car - they have a reputation for screwing customers with unfair or hidden charges!

Definitely a scam, what are they gonna do? Bollox to it.

Careful they could go after him with a European Arrest Warrant well up until the end of March anyway.

In or out of the EU, I believe you can safely ignore them.

Sound like a scam mate, ignore it.

Precisely my thought, and what I would do. Plus I wouldn’t return to Italy in a hurry. Nor indeed at any speed

If I were you I wouldn't pay the fines. Then move to Georgia for a while!
If they decide to come after you looks like it would take months of wrangling and court time to try and extradite you or get you to pay up! So they probably wouldn't even bother.

It'd be interesting to know how zealous the UK authorities are in their pursuit of foreign nationals jumping speeding and parking fines incurred whilst holidaying in these fair islands.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
