Liverpool 3-3?

But I agree. I also think he is too good to sit on the bench in the Prem.

When we signed him at first, I always felt he was signed with one eye on relegation. But we never got relegated. If we were in Fulham’s position then I would sign him. But we are not.

TBH I dd think of Crystanbul when I wrote it and also fond memories of him scoring very quickly away from home against the Geordies.

Was he a lone striker in those games though? Was he a sub against Liverpool and bought on with us chasing the game and throwing players forward?

Stats on their own don't tell the whole story. Very few doubted his ability to finish, actually one of the best natural finishers I think we ever had BUT he did not have the ability to play as a lone striker, always needed a second striker alongside him to feed off. Of all the goals he scored how many were as a lone striker? How many of the 17 goals were game changers that made up the sacrifice elsewhere in the team to play him?

I don't know where Matteo got his stats from but according to Transfermarkt it was only 15 goals (in 3451 minutes) in the PL for Palace. I suspect he has credited Gayle with goals in cup games against PL opponents (even though it is not the same thing).

As you suggest, the stats do not tell the whole story. In many games he was a passenger, and it is perhaps telling that nowhere has he got regular games in the PL despite his obvious ability to finish.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

I did yes add his goals against PL opponents (at that time) Newcastle and West Brom in the Cup games.

Still, it was 15 goals in only in 2700 minutes for Palace in the Premier League, I don't see where you get the 3451 minutes figure from.

And for someone saying he can't lead the line, all his 23 goals in 2100 minutes in the Championship season when Newcastle got promoted came from lone striker position.

That's got to be worth at least 1 goal every 200 minutes in the Premier League, which makes for a decent striker (fact proven at Newcastle with 6 goals and 3 assists in 1900 minutes against Chelsea and other good opposition).

I agree that now is not the time anymore as he's closing in on 30 years of age, but he should have been kept all those years ago.

I said to yall that Benteke's no better than him, but you didn't want to listen.

I obviously got the minutes wrong, in the same way you got the goals wrong.

That being said, I never claimed Benteke was better than him so why are you arguing that? All I said was that Gayle was a passenger in many games. Several managers at two clubs have treated him in the same way. Why would you think you know better than them?

As for Benteke, we look a far better side when he is playing despite his lack of goals. It's like Marouane Chamakh in our fist season up. We looked far better with him in the team than we did when he was not playing despite his lack of goals. Football is a team sport remember.

Perhaps many people don't listen due to your constant "I know better than you" comments when you do little more than quote stats from transfermarkt etc. Also, arguing that a player is proven to score because in a few games he did x or y is silly. The sample size is too small to know, and does not predict the future.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

The posts from 2016 are still on here, I have looked and I can’t find where you said that. Can you point to the post?

I'm sure there are more but this is what I could find:

It was a response from me after several posters had claimed that Benteke is worth 50 million and Gayle isn't even worth 5. Ok, maybe Gayle wasn't a better forward than Benteke, but time has proven that there isn't really much difference between the two.

Also, notice the thread that was made by me about Alan Pardew and his tactics.
See the first pages and what people thought about my ideas.

See the next message in the linked page I posted. It's a poster laughing of me because I had set Townsend as my favourite player on my profile.

Aee what I had to go through years ago when I was telling people something? Only time has proven I was right, but now those topics are largely forgotten...

How is this drum still getting banged? He wasn't fancied by several managers at Palace and couldn't cut it in the PL at Newcastle.

He's not coming back, let's move on.

Ah, so your posts are after we had signed Benteke.

So you didnt say anything before we signed Benteke? What were you saying then? Are there any posts from you in that period? I think there was a guy called Miles who said that he wasn’t all that, but most other people thought he would be a good signing.

Do you still think all that you said is right? What about the bit about him coming up to the Premier League and being successful for someone else?

Many of your assessments are based on an assessment of value, so do you still stand by the fact that Benteke is £50 million and Gayle is £5 million?

Mattteo, I am not trying to bait you. But It does pain me to see you diminishing your knowledge by clinging to your binary opinions. Opinions are all about making judgements, some are right, others are wrong. Your opinions would be so much more compelling if you were able to see the wrongs as well as the rights.

Also, you shouldn’t bestow Expert status on yourself. Others do that by the way they treat your opinion. Not people on a forum, but your peers in the industry that you want to be in. If they treat your opinion with gravitas then you me opinion has gravitas.

I am not being patronising, but you definitely have talent. You just need to stop being so wedded to your opinions, accept that there are other views and provide more rounded analysis and you would have me won over.

The simple fact that he is no longer at Newcastle, and no-one else in the Prem is queuing up for him speaks volumes. Been there, tried that. Next

Technically at Newcastle but on loan to WBA until the end of the season.
That said, I totally agree with the sentiments about his ability to be effective in the PL.

One thing many people did predict correctly back in 2016 was that Gayle would end up being benched by Newcastle. He has still only proven that he's a great Championship striker. Even if we wanted him (which I'm confident we don't) why would he come back to a club where he never got any playing time?

On paper he looks like a PL striker, but whenever he played from the start he just seemed to disappear from games. He reminds me of Defoe, but just not quite as good. Comparing him to Bentenke is pointless as they're completely different players.
