Just to point out we have been around for over 100 years and this is our 6/7 season in the Prem.
With around 200 million coming in each year ( I read somewhere we are /were the 30th richest club in the world) we should not be "far behind " any of the bottom 14 clubs, currently in the Prem.

most of those 100 years have been something of a toil, and now we're earning more (surely 200m is over-stated?) we are in a league where everybody is getting that. so if we want to keep the revenue, we have to spend a higher-than-average proportion of it on wages. it's something of a catch 22.

where we did screw up was Sakho and Benteke. all told, they probably cost us 100m. Sakho is absolute quality and I rate Benteke higher than most, but 100m on building a true scouting network and proper youth set up...it would have us in a better position today. of course, the flip side is an increased relegation risk...so back to that catch 22.

Scouting and an academy is a long term project, clubs don’t have the time to invest £100m in them, it’s just isn’t going to happen.
How many a Academy products are playing for other Premier clubs from where they started, not many. We have 2 which is above the average.
What is a true scouting network as opposed to a scouting network and why would it cost so much?

That is only one aspect of an academy. The other is to bring through players who can be sold at a profit and we don't seem to be too good at that

A true scouting network is one that finds better alternatives than Sorloth, Jach and Rakip

The same one that found Guaita, Kouyate and Meyer.

It's all well and good talking about surviving, but if we carry on like this then we will be relegated sooner rather than later...if not this season, then next, or maybe the one after...which is no way to attract new supporters...in fact I can't be the only one who has found the last few seasons pretty much unenjoyable at Selhurst, bar a few games (we've lost so many it's scary). If we go down we'll have to sell our best players and will be back to square one with pretty much f*** all to show for the over half a billion pounds we've been given since 2013. Look at the teams who have gone down recently, many have become championship also rans...and a few are even worse and could see league 1 soon. That could very easily be us. No idea what the answer is but we can't carry on like this.

The original post about youth/scouting investment is excellent.

A lot of confusion over revenue. Revenue is irrelevant in isolation and the figure of 200m per season accurate or not, is meaningless. It's about where that money goes. Ours goes (massively disproportionately) on wages.

A relatively small investment of 10 million and then 5 million a season in the youth and youth scouting would pay dividends and provide a sustainable model (Google Nicola Cortese, Southampton)

There's also a comment about how much can a scouting network cost: fag packet maths shows you don't need to be an expert to determine "a lot less than Wilf's weekly salary" per week.

Alex Ferguson immediately invested in a local (and eventually national and international) scouting network at United, increasing scouts in greater Manchester more than 10 fold. He got the class of 92 off the back of it.

We have (I believe) the biggest catchment area in Europe in the form of the south London boroughs.

Just imagine.

We have an academy. How many of those will make it? Or even given the chance? AWB came in through injury to others, and look how incredible he has been! Southampton have done the same, grow talent and then let them go for pence. See a pattern?

Lingard, Rashford, Pogba and McTominey just in this season's squad alone.

Come the end of every season we have been many points safe, no reason as far as I can see to worry about not achieving the same this season, we need to understand we are small fish in a rather large pond, danger lurks if we rush about in it.

Some of us need to take a chill pill.

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that, in the event that Roy goes this summer and Man Utd opt for a different full time manager going forward, we should give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a stab at the job.

It looks pretty clear to me that he's grown considerably as a manager since his Cardiff days, and with the right coaching set up to complement his more attack-oriented approach (e.g. getting a defensive minded assman like Phelan), he could do a good job.

Whether his intense attacking style might translate well from a big side like Man Utd to a lower Prem team like Palace is the question.

PS, I'd like to see the Palace academy side in the EFL Trophy at some point. Would be good experience for them. But for now, try to get a couple of the kids in the squad for Grimsby this weekend.
