Every season the primary ambition for the club is to retain it's place in the Premier League - the race to 40 points if you like. Anything else is a bonus. I have no issue with that and nor do most Palace fans that I know. '' mid table mediocrity '' - bring it on ! It would just be more enjoyable if that can be attained without the annual battle to achieve it. Indeed that was the club's stated ambition this season. Already that is looking beyond us. In all my time supporting this club, I can scarcely remember a season when there wasn't at least some degree of anxiety involved. This season is turning out to be no different.

Look at stoke and West Brom getting relegated!! Who would’ve thought they would’ve gone down, they both seemed to have got themselves established with fairly high finishes, especially stoke.Swansea had a good side for a year or two and ended up slipping through the trap door because they started looking up and stopped concentrating on staying in the division No-one outside the big 6 is safe, in my opinion we should always be concentrating on staying up and if we click and have a decent season then it’s a bonus, then we just start again next season with the same mentality, just geting to the 40 points mark is still a good season for us, especially how things are now. Not entirely correct. They sold/lost their best players and failed to fill them. If we are struggling to fill the midfielders boots at the moment dread to think how we could manage if Wilf goes.

Not as easy as it sounds, buying a quality forward ... especially when you have the redevelopment of the Main Stand looming at 100 million + We've spent a fair bit on transfers and wages but just chosen badly and been sold a donkey here & there ... we took our chances and are now regretting some of them. Every season in this division will be a struggle for Palace until we get some rich investors like Wolves. The Yanks have stumped up some cash but not to the level some of us might have expected. Perhaps if we didn't have plans for the main stand we'd see more investment in the squad but we can't expect it all ...

People are annoyed that the performances this season aren't measuring up to those of last season or the potential of the squad. I haven't heard anyone calling for Roy to be sacked or demanding European football - mainly just anxiety that we're not picking up enough points or playing well enough to attain survival.

god damn this club hates ambition... have we not earned to right to expect something more than a relegation battle? We've been put through the ringer every year more or less and for once we thought we could feel relatively secure in the summer and aim for the top half or so with a settled squad and manager but yet again are being disappointed as players underperform. Yet again, we're stood like lemons in Selhurst while some scruffy Northern mutants rock up, have a lovely old time and take 3 points home while it pisses down why is it such a crime to demand more? We don't ask for much do we? Even Parish said we should start thinking bigger Edited by iheartcpfc (10 Oct 2018 5.36am)

We do seem to teeter on the brink of something special every now and then and then blow it, early 80’s and 90’s it all went Tits up after building two great sides. At least this time we’re stretching it out over a few more years before it all goes Pete Tong Edited by monkey (10 Oct 2018 6.35am)

Yup bang on. Back in the day, my Dad and I often used to speculate after yet another dire performance and defeat (eg 1-4 Chesterfield in 1974) what would have happened if the Chesterfield players (in that example) had represented Palace and vice versa? We always concluded that Palace would probably have lost that fantasy game too. I suppose it was our way of recognising that if this club can screw up, then it inevitably will. A phrase I used recently in another thread is that we will always turn silk purses into sows’ ears. When we acquire sows’ ears in the first place (Schlupp? Sørloth? Ayew? according to opinions expressed in other threads) there’s nowhere to go! Edited by YT (10 Oct 2018 8.09am)
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |
