Optimistic as ever

I would not bother with the boat race...they have passed in a blink, and you can hardly see anything. I did the end of an ashes tour in 1990/91 and saw the last two test in Adelaide and Perth, with gooch and a very young atherton opening.

My addition would be a British Lions tour. Preferably NZ but anywhere would do.

I’d like to see Palace score a goal at Selhurst Park.

Many years ago, I went on a cricket tour with my club. We played against Minehead, who had a ‘guest player’ - a fast bowler who was said to be on the fringes of the NZ test team. I’ve never seen a cricket ball move so fast. The batsmen in my team all sh@t themselves and the wickets tumbled. Then they rested the guy and we managed to consolidate to an extent before they brought him back in to finish us off. More wickets fell before I went in at no 10 with 11 deliveries left.

I didn’t see the first two deliveries. They seemed to hit the wicketkeeper’s gloves before the bowler had let go, with the fielders all gasping at how the ball had somehow missed the stumps. The third ball I shut my eyes and put my foot and bat to roughly where I guessed the ball was going to go, only for the ball to hit my bat and race to the boundary along the ground past the gulley fielder. It was the best cricket shot I ever played, and I knew nothing about it.

This infuriated the bowler who then bowled the most short-pitched bouncer imaginable, which sailed over me and the keeper for 4 byes. Even more incensed, his next ball was straight at me. Again I didn’t see it, but he veered towards the leg side and hit my pads. I had survived, and I will never forget the cheers of my teammates - at that moment and then again after the final over passed as a tame maiden meaning we gained a dishonourable draw.

I do miss the old cricket.

Actually you're probably much better off with Trinidad than you would be with the place named in its stead in the original German version of Toch's Fuge aus der Geographie (Geographical Fugue), which was Raciborz (Ratibor), a beastly little dump in southern Poland. Even the name is horrible.
