According to Ed Smith he has been picked due to the heavy weight of runs he's made this season but he didn't mention that his runs were scored in division 2 against pretty weak bowling attacks. I doubt whether he will play as Jack Leach is the "spare" spinner and presumably Ollie Pop would get the nod ahead of Denly anyway

Denly is 32 for gawd's sake...32! Cook's only just retired at 33. From the options that are available it is a surprising choice. Though it has to be said....this wasn't a summer for openers.

Michael Hussey was 30 and Chris Rogers 31 when they made their test debuts. There seems to be a dearth of English opening batsmen at the moment and Denly is probably being taken as a stop gap to give the selectors time to evaluate the others. Everyone is talking about Rory Burns as being the saviour as he has performed consistently well in County Cricket but don't forget that Mark Stoneman passed 1,000 runs each season for the last few years and he didn't cut the mustard at the highest level

There is a definite point that players with talent to perform the role for years are far more a sensible pick than choosing a player who will be retiring or declining within a few years time. He deserves his chance.....I would say he deserved it before now and that Jennings held him up. Never rated Stoneman myself....Lyth was better but was given less chances.

I agree but what the stats don't take into account is that his lower than hoped for average was batting against Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood when firing on all cylinders and on their home soil

Hameed has distinguished himself playing aboard in high pressure situations. Players like Tescothick and Gower were chosen for England with moderate county records. Hameed is young and has bags of potential.

Only his average at home let him down. Hameed can't be anywhere near the squad at the moment, his batting has fallen to pieces. Temporary or not, he's got to show something at county level before he gets another look in.
