I had a flat in whitworth rd, se25, 2 mins from selhurst park, in late 80s & lived there until early 90s.
used to have a big pub life and thriving high st.
was pretty safe then, but like much of Sth London gang culture has ruined it.
they can put in as many nice shops as they like but its still dodgy after dark.
the parks are no go as you'll get raped or beaten up at the wrong time of evening.
didn't help closing down the huge cop shop facing the old alliance pub.

Certain parts of South London have been revived, or gentrified if you like. I'm not sure South Norwood is ultimately a candidate for that. It takes some brave people - individuals and businesses - to risk moving in to a dilapidated area to start the change. Although, as noted, one or two have.

Of course, if a neighbourhood does go upmarket it pushes up house costs and eventually prices out poorer people. However, as things stand, that seems to be the price that has to be paid if an area is to be regenerated. But, of course, that means that somewhere else has to take on the people and issues that have been displaced from their original location.

Those were the days eh Bob, when Alf had The Jolly Sailor and Joe had The Cherry Trees. Flitting between them two and The Portmanor, and guaranteed a punch-up in any of them !!!

I was thinking the same thing about Lewisham. There has been a major flat building project from Catford to Lewisham to Deptford and then Greenwhich. The price of a 2 bed flat in Lewisham is more expensive than where I live in Beckenham. The re-generation is lopsided and I know where I would rather live.

Lots of fancy flats that most people can't afford to buy or rent. Yet Lewisham is still a dump. We don't have a cinema, decent restaurant, shops or pubs. The high street looks like there been a bin strike for months due to the market. It doesn't have to be that way Bromley has a market that adds to the area.

Lewisham council are grabbing the money from additional
council tax yet they have given no thought to actually improving the area for the locals.

indeed.
also, the Alliance was rammed most nights and was good on a match day.
plus the ship had the pool room out back.
What was Joe thinking having the best night of the week with franks mobile disco/60s night on a bloody sunday!
The amount of mondays me & Dave used to cry off or be totally useless due to sunday nights excess.

My doctors surgery was up whitworth road when I lived in SN, That was late 80’s, early 90’s as well
As you say, it was pretty safe round there back then, 4 years I lived there and no problems, I especially loved it on match day!
Although there wasn’t much round there, it was obviously easy to get into Croydon shopping, nights out etc
Happy days!!!

you may remember on the last stand-in Holmesdale/promotion day game against Watford there was a ground floor flat just up whitworth road and the bay was totally decked out in palace shirts & scarves.
Was my place.
I had blokes (and some girls) on their knees doing the ayatollah worship to them before & after the match.
happy days indeed.

No offense, but your location says South Poole....not exactly an oasis of bliss and annually appears on in the top 10 "chav" places in the UK!

Back to South Norwood. It will take years before any real regeneration happens. The high street is a mess and there is no off street parking for passing trade.

I'm tough. I'm ambitious. I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, I'm OK with that.

What are you on about?? His location, says ‘South Pole’ which unless he’s a penguin, is obviously a joke!!
