it looked like Joel Ward had learned a trick or two when he came on. Hopefully ABW has made Ward up his game in the same way that Hennessy has with Guaita. At least we have decent cover at RB and it won't hurt for AWB to have a break from the limelight and learn a hard lesson. It's a long season. Edited by Frickin Saweet (21 Aug 2018 9.17am) I happen to believe that had we not conceded the penalty and it was 0-0, AWB would not have been placed in that position at a time when we needed to chase the game to equalise. Hugely promising player who I think has less than 10 PL appearances to his name.

Its the first time I saw him tired...either through the covering he was doing or the occasion getting to him...started to wilt a little 10mins before his sending off; nevertheless an unbelievable prospect..perhaps the one game ban will be a blessing in disguise...and Ward looked ok when he came on as well!

If you had Townsend in front of you then you would be making plenty of last ditch challenges!!

He is an attack-minded full back who is obviously asked to push up and provide a wide option when Townsend cuts inside. Walker does it for Man City but the difference is the movement of a centre midfielder, usually Fernandinho, back to cover defence and to fill the deficit in defence. It didn't look like anyone was told or willing to do that for us and playing so narrow AWB had little other option. He was the only player to get near Salah in the breakaway and took one for the team by getting that red card.
I read on sky it was a 3 game ban but I thought it would just be 1 as it wasn't serious foul play, just a professional foul.

The kid is doing well there's no doubt about it, but he takes a hell of a lot of unnecessary risks in possession and we were lucky to not get punished for it last night. There were two or three occasions when he tried to take a man on in the opposition half when Townsend was miles ahead of him and there was no cover behind him, he lost the ball and there was all the space in the world behind him for the Scouser Scum to counter into. I know he's a former winger but feel sometimes he needs to remember that he is now a fullback.

Maybe I'm blind but I've watched the replay in slow motion several times and can't see how it's a foul, let alone a red card, and Salah should be banned for diving. All the focus is on the penalty incident but this is the real controversy in my opinion. Also, f*** off Michael Oliver, the new Clattenberg imho. f***ing loves the big boys and never hesitates to give them what they need to beat the little guys.

He's not the finished product yet, still has a ways to go but this criticism of last ditch tackles it a bit much I think. He was up against a team who have players with silly pace all over the place, no-one is saying anything about Sanchez or Alexander-Arnold doing the same thing when Wilf was going past? Some players are going to get past you nomatter how good you are, having the ability and timing to get back at them and nick the ball away if it happens is a positive. As for the red, it's not like he tried to make a challenge, just put Salah under pressure but nicked his leg whilst doing it. The kid has great future if he carries on, Clyne did it for us in the Championship, he's doing it in the Premier League.
"They got his own song 'He's just too good for you', it's quite unbelievable but when you see it and he's facing up someone - I actually feel sorry for them, 'Cos he actually is" - Ian Holloway |

I know it has been said many times on here before, but this time the "best full back since Kenny Sansom" claim looks to be coming true if early impressions of this lad are confirmed. With our experienced coaching staff, he has a great chance of becoming exceptional. His sending off came because he was the only player fast enough to get back and in range of Salah. His positional sense is coachable, his natural ability and athleticism is exciting. I even liked his reaction to the sending off: he was upset, but didn't argue; there was no petulance, just regret at leaving his team with only 10 men. The best prospect since Zaha for me.

I was watching the match on TV with my probably soon to be son-in-law who is a Spurs fan, both of us shouted 'what a tackle' as soon as WB got to Salah. He was astounded as I when he was shown the red. When you looked at it in slo mo yes you could see the contact but still very harsh. Not on subject but what bias from Alan Smith last night, sounded like a Liverpool love in all through. Biggest one being when Salah headed into the top corner only for Henderson to acrobatically tip over the bar. Mr Smith ....'what a great header!!' Nowt about the save.

Yes, I was talking to Shipperly after the game and he confirmed it was a one match rather than a 3 match ban for a professional foul, which is good news for us. AWB will learn a lot from that game and will emerge a better player for it. The applause he got from the entire ground speaks volumes for 1) How well he performed and 2) The empathy of the crowd toward him over the sending off.
