Let's have it right. You think his motivation to down tools and force a move is so he can be close to his estranged family. I think it's an added convenience rather than the reason

I think I've stated it clearly enough with the last sentence of my last post.

Do you think he's downed tools at Chelsea in order to convince them to give him a new contract and higher wages?

He's got two young kids living in another country. I don't think that is a "convenience".

Of course ! Welcome to Prem football ! Where've you been for 20 years?

If a bigger club comes calling who'll double your salary you'll go there, unless your current club matches it, if they don't then you sulk, refuse to train or whatever it takes to force the move through, which is what he is doing. Whether his kids also live in the same City is neither here nor there

At the end of the day, whether he refused to train,or not Courtois and Real Madrid got what they wanted. Most clubs, specially from abroad when they want a player, they only have to plant a small seed and it is conveniently picked up by the media, players, players agents etc, which in turn forces clubs like Chelsea’s hand. A football clubs can not side line a players of Courtois calibre without weaking the team, and more to the point with the complexity of contracts nowadays a player can insist on game percentage and other weird and wonderful things.

I'm always a bit skeptical about these reports. I suspect that the selling club leaks the information out so that fans are anti the player for forcing a move rather than anti the club for selling him.

Could be wrong though.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Possibly but I can't see what the club gains from it?

If it gets to a point where the player refuses to play that weakens their negotiating position?

I disagree. I think he did it to force the move, not for more wages to stay where he was. I don't know why you think playing for Chelsea and Europa League football would be preferable to playing for Madrid and Champions League football, with a good chance of winning it, and being able to see your two young kids on a much more regular basis.

Lucky his ex doesn't live in Glasgow then, or he would have to push for a move to Celtic?

Not really, two hours away for someone on that kind of money.

By that reckoning Madrid is only 3!

More like 4.5 hours and then you have immigration/border control on top of that.

and you'd probably have to stop in France to refuel. So add on another hour or two.

Yes for more wages. as i've already said if another club wants you and will pay you more you will go there, no other factor comes into it. Footballers just go to whoever pays you the most
