How the hell did we get promoted, and how the hell did we end up with so many good players in our best 11? Not disagreeing with you but it does beg the question. Perhaps our high wage bill is an indication of the fact we mainly got these players through agents etc. Also that would explain why we have little money left to buy more. Edited by FairweatherEagle (28 Jul 2018 7.28pm) Maybe I’m being a bit harsh. Don’t get me wrong, I think for a club of our size and resources we have done extremely well to be embarking on our sixth consecutive season in the Premier League. It’s not the quality of the squad that concerns me. Clearly, with the right coaching, we have a team of players capable of holding their own at this level. It’s the failure to identify and recruit players for those positions where we are short of cover and the fact that we always leave any signing attempts to the last minute that I find worrying. Perhaps it’s not the scouting that’s the problem; it’s getting people ‘over the line’.

I don't think you're being particularly harsh pigglelet, you make valid points. Just trying to understand where we are better. I reckon the market has got tougher and tougher to operate in year on year and our scouting/recruiting teams have found it harder and harder, being relativity small.. in 2010-13 it was easier to build a strong promotion candidate than it is now.

This is not a 2010 excuse but when we went into administration the scouting network was completely destroyed and I suspect scouts not paid. After the gang of 4 took over it was never expanded back to its former size, hence the scatter gun approach when we joined EPL. It is probably better now but is still not as good as many clubs
It is different times now with technology you can use systems to watch footage and look at stats also networking is whats important. One of the other things people are not even mentioning is it's all well and good having the scouting network but comes on the big clubs are just grabbing the talent to stop others and whos to say even if Palace find some good quality they are interested in coming to us.

Painter has a point though...its easy to find players that will improve a threadbare and mediocre squad; but as the Scum would always bring out once the Sun had set on their 5mins being above us...we have a £100m+ squad! As such players to improve it are harder to find and much more expensive...as long as whoever we get is the right fit I'm not that bothered if we dont sign anyone and keep our money.

We rarely seem to identify the sorts of players that other clubs of a similar size manage to bring in. Our financial situation (whatever that might be) probably plays a part, but I have felt for years that our scouting set up simply isn't up to Championship, never mind Premier League, standard. so the teams that have finished below us have got it right?

If everything goes through as expected then i recon the club and scouts have done a great window... Quality keeper for free. They might not all work out. But on paper looks bloody good window considering we have no cash and want to build a new stand soon.

This article came up on my phone as a suggested read. Great insight into our scouting system and who chooses the players. Not Roy or Dougie!
I read this board everyday but never write anything; except this. |

As for Jach it seems he was purchased to be developed and not ready yet, hence his current loan. People lambast our scouting but TBH I think any shortfallings have more to do with our turnover of managers and SP to his credit has realized that the idea of having stable management cannot be guaranteed so in order to have more stability in signings has installed Dougie in the role. It's a long term approach and I do not think can be fairly judged in the short term.
