Eh? Now you aren’t making sense, or at best are complicating the situation. The guy said 5-1 or 6-1 odds for Palace to be relegated was a crap bet, because he thinks they are bound to stay up. So I said that if he was that sure, then he should lay Palace to be relegated. The key words are ‘if he’s sure’ in which case the odds..the value being with the punter etc are irrelevant. If he’s not sure, then he shouldn’t bet. What odds will you lay me Palace to stay up?

So it's better to put £1000 on at 9/4 (my original suggestion odds-wise not stake-wise) bcos you get £3250, i.e.£250 more than the lay bet. The difference in pay out stems from bookies giving stingy odds - if Palace are 9/4 to do it they should be 4/9 NOT to do it, or 3/1 as opposed to 1/3. I won't give you my sort code and account number but I do take cheques. PS YT's advice is thus proven unsound. You are far cleverer than me, but I wasn’t purporting to offer the guy betting advice. I’ll try to explain one more time... He said that betting on Palace to be relegated was a sucker bet, as it (relegation) ain’t gonna happen. I said why doesn’t he place a lay bet, so he will benefit from such a ‘certainty’. End of. Of course there are far more sophisticated betting strategies; but that wasn’t my point.

YT I owe you an apology, I thought you were referring to top ten odds not relegation odds, still clarified things for the initiated, I think I need to go and mow the lawn now but I don't have one

We stayed gentlemanly! I had a lawn (well, some grass) but I fear that the heatwave has put paid to it.

Or a loss of £10,000 if they are indeed relegated.

Or a loss of £10,000 if they are indeed relegated. cheers, I was going to ask how much money you'd be interested in making, I'm not trying to out-technical you or some such bllx, cos I think 1/8 us going down is a crap bet, I wudnt be laying us at 5s or 6s to go down, prob around 3-1 or 7-2, I'd want £4, 000 for my ten grand, that's 2/5 which says the biggest price for us to be relegated should actually be 5/2 not 5/1 or 6/1. But if we do get these players in then the odds would change - if we got nobody in then I'd be lumping on us at 6/1 to go down, so maybe our chum dissing those odds was being a bit over-loyal to our beloved Palace.
