I'm quite disappointed that this thread is not a debate about who would win a fight between miners and farmers.

Miners. End of.

If we suffered loss of our imported foods during a conflict we could very quickly re-direct the very significant farm land we have towards purely internal use.

And hope they grow overnight?

Back in the 70's 80's we essentially got rid of miners and were told by them it would kill communities. 40 years on we survived.

With brexit we are told the same for farmers.
If they only exist because of subsidies what is the actual point?

Has brexit just highlighted there is no money in farming?

I am most worried for keyboard warriors; which mining town were you in as you state "we"?

There is a reason that the properties are so cheap and that there are surpluses in social housing. The main reason being there are so few jobs. Accessibility by road is difficult, the train service is pitiful and is run by a crap provider, there is a huge drug problem in comparison to the population, services such as GP's etc are really stretched due to an aging population and a lack of desire for professionals to move to the area to relieve the problem.

So yes, property is cheap, but without hope it may as well be free. Which is why the youngsters who want to make something of themselves tend to move into Cardiff, Bristol or even further away. There is no heavy industry for the less academically gifted youngsters to be employed by so the vicious circle just keeps turning no hope - crime/drugs - youth pregnancies - no hope.
