I was a young teenager and remember too but it has to be said the most watched league in the world, the multinational EPL, is in England where all the infrastructure as well as the mass of football fans are - across Europe - where Euro 96 was a massive success on and off the pitch as can be said for the 2012 Olympics too. Far rather Morocco was hosting it in 2022 but it would have been refreshing and a real sign of a changing FIFA had it won for 2026. But it is same old same old!

This will be awesome. A nice vacation to Mexico for a couple games, travel around the US watching a few more, might even head up to Canada.

Europe and Asia aren't able to host it in 2026 so no it's not really a joke that we couldn't host this one. We will be bidding for 2030 against a joint bid of Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay, already with the backing of a lot of countries.

Also the format for 2026 will be ‘interesting’. Presumably the 48 countries taking part (48!!) will lessen the impact of 3 host nations getting automatic places. But I wonder if FIFA will do anything ‘silly’ such as in 2002, where the geography made it the first World Cup where two countries in the same group could meet again before the final - or for the pendants like me out there - before the final group in 1950. * 2002 was effectively one World Cup of 16 in Japan and one World Cup of 16 in South Korea, with the winners of each then meeting in the final. * There was the famous shirt-swapping embrace between Bobby Moore and Pele at the end of England v Brazil in 1970, when Pele said to Moore “see you again in the final, my friend”. Had it been 2002, he would have to have said “see you again in the semi”. Not quite as romantic!

Mexico had to be included to make the bid credible. It's the only country of the 3 that has any football history/pedigree. Still, most of the games will be held in non-footbal historical venues, USA/Canada making it very bland IMO, probably giving it a miss, same for the current one in Russia but that's for other reasons.

I would expect this world cup and the next one both to be fiaschi and after that they will have to tear everything up and start again. Even FIFA can only survive being a total shambles for a few decades at most. Edited by chateauferret (13 Jun 2018 10.45pm)

They had said it would be 16 groups of 3 teams = 48 games. I would not like that as it would lessen the intensity of the group stage. I would prefer 12 groups of 4, top 2 from each plus 8 best 3rd's but thats way more than 80 games so not happening.
