Agreed. Roy is the right man to bring him through. I think he will play a few cup games next season and if we get a few injuries he may get a few league games. I think he needs another year or so in the gym as he is a little on the small side and will need to bulk up a little. Why this obsession with players having to bulk up? Messi, Neymar, Couthino and Mahrez are all smal and "tiny"". But they are still doin' their business..so why can't any of our youngsters do the same?

Would love it so much if we managed to keep Cabaye for another season whilst bringing Kirby in to the 1st team. It’s not like he’s been with the club since being a kid but still. Would love to see him break through. Anyone know if anyone else is close ?

Messi’s got serious core strength. I think he enjoys surfing which is amazing for your core strength.

I think Wilfs years of stalled development was over an obsession of bulking up and becoming an “out and out” wide right winger instead of letting him utilise his natural ability. He’s fantastic now but I still think he was a better dribbler as a kid, so skinny and would just wriggle through challenges in his first spell with us.

When Wilf bulked yo he went to the next level. He is so hard to shake off the ball now and actually uses his strength to his advantage as a runner on the ball. Building up your core strength is a good thing unless you go like Akinfenwa and overdo it.

Building up your core strength is a good thing unless you go like Akinfenwa and overdo it. It depends in what context you look at it. And also the style of team you’re playing in. I think the bulking up made him a more direct and powerful player but put less emphasis on his ball control, which when he first played for us at times was just incredible. He’s obviously still amazing with the ball at his feet because that’s natural ability that can’t be taught, but he was cleaner, quicker & more agile with it in his skinnier & younger days, in my opinion. He used to be what I’d call “slippery”, where he’d literally just wriggle past challenges and was often untouchable. I think he was moulded into more of a Bolasie type player (not saying Yala is anywhere near his level), but much more emphasis was placed on his power. And using his body to ride challenges, as opposed to his natural agility. Especially the days Pardew & Holloway etc. wanted his sole focus to be taking players to the byline and whipping balls in. Which is more about directness, pace and power, than it is when coming inside and getting in behind which is what I’ve always thought he was best at, and is what he’s been given the freedom to do all season. I used the wrong term when saying bulk up. Not as in get much heavier/stockier, just needs more core strength from what I have seen. Agree totally with comments about Zaha, he has got better and better since becoming physically stronger, and I see Kirby in the same type of mould. I would imagine Roy has him in mind and would be very surprised if he has not already got him doing extra work, as he really could be the next gem to come through.
Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs. |
