I am informed that only about 3% of goals result from corners.

There has been a growing trend towards not putting a player on both posts, with a preference instead to leave one or both unguarded. One of the reasons is to use a corner conceded as a platform from which to launch your own counter-attack. Andre Villas-Boas and Brendan Rodgers, were among those to first use this tactic in the PL. They believe opposing teams are at their most vulnerable when taking a corner.

Furthermore,by putting players on the post this leaves less players in the box to defend a header or to block off runners and there is also the offside implication when teams use more complex corner taking routines with multiple touches.

At Leeds defending corners, Garry Monk had his best headers of a ball not marking man-to-man but free so they didn't get blocked off. Tim Sherwood has said that generally the best headers of a ball are stationed at the near post.

All good points + defenders can get in goalies way and a hard shot in the corner - especially if high is unstoppable anyways
