No mention of what party he is standing for?

I mentioned on another thread that I was a Poll Clerk in Bromley for the local elections and we would be trialing the Voter ID scheme.

I have just finished my 16 hour shift and I am happy to report that despite the scare stories that may appear in tomoorow's papers all went well. The public were well informed and not the least bit concerned they had to produce id. In fact many said it was about time.

Some groups have claimed that this discriminates but I do not see how. The vast majority of people have a drivers license or passport (can also be EU or Commonwealth) or a Freedom Pass. If you don't have them how about a bank card and a utility bill. Now if you have no photo id or any form of address identification I would question why are you on the Electoral Role? If you cannot prove who you are I don't see how the council can check that you are eligible to vote or how you can claim benefits, pay tax etc.

To be honest the media are just hyping this up. I dealt with lots of folk today from many different cultures they were not bothered.

There is an argument that voter fraud at the polling station is rare and therefore this is an expensive solution but other than that I see no issues.

Anyway I am tired so going to bed I am happy to answer any questions.

Nope, not very Dad like at all. I vote for these morons to ensure that street lighting is working, bins are emptied twice a week (you'll be lucky)and make sure other amenities are up to scratch. I don't vote for these clowns to foist their own personal agendas on hard paying taxpayers who don't give a monkey's about mixed bathrooms & the like.

You're right. The system was easy to follow given the extensive promotion provided for the scheme and the wide range of personal I.D to choose from e.g. driving licence. Only complaint that I've picked up on via radio analysis has been dubious argument of infringement of civil liberties when there clearly needs to be a system established to beat voter identity fraud.

As the results continue to come in, I have to agree with comments of Corbyn power having peaked given that Labour, as main opposition party, should've put The Conservatives to the sword. None of the parties can really claim to have made sweeping gains when noteworthy losses have been made as well. Lib Dems have made several gains however they have hardly set the political world alight as a result.

What do others think?

Surely the news that the Tories have held ground in the face of (sn1gger) ferocious and relentless campaigning from Owen Jones is victory in itself?

He's been uncharacteristically quiet since the results started streaming in.

Yea I don't see the problem with asking for ID, but in that case I do think we should have govt issue (free) ID cards like they do in France and Germany etc.

ID cards would also have avoided the Windrush mess and would have made implementing the EU rules on immigration possible, which we've largely not bothered with.

I agree that Labour hierarchy will be disappointed with results so far, despite winning most seats. I think they got a bit ahead of themselves with their expectations.

I think Brexit is clearly still having an impact on how people vote and with there being such polarity on this issue but little change since a year ago, it's not surprising that not much changed in the electoral maths. UKIP vote has largely gone to Tories for this reason.

Things will probably evolve more once Brexit actually happens and if/when a recession rolls around.

Without Brexit I'm sure the Tories would have done a lot lot worse given austerity, Windrush, general incompetence etc.

Hugely disappointed - and they never won "Most seats" !!!!

Labour expected to rout the Conservatives but they can't show the kind of progress they would be shouting about if they were truly convinced they were on a rapid march to Number 10.

It was generally felt that the Conservatives would take a pummelling at the polls but we have done far better than was expected.A very disappointing night for Labour.

Currently on 1,467 with Tories on 884. Labour up 37 Tories down 2...

1,467 is more than any other party, commonly referred to as "the most".

I'm not sure they did expect the kind of rout you're talking about, but they will be disappointed with having not done better given some polls showing they could win councils not held for a long time/ever. They've done poorly in places like Walsall and Derby where UKIP vote has moved to the Tories. This looks to be a Brexit effect. In Richmond the Tories had a poor result for similar reasons.

One can introduce semantics but my interpretation of "Most Seats" gives a message of a total rout when this hasn't been the case.

In terms of the numbers you provided, 1467 and 884, Labour went into this election defending far more seats than the Conservatives.

One can mention the "Brexit effect" but there are probably a number of factors which influenced voting patterns not least local issues.
