I go to Thailand at least once every year and have been well over 40 times. You do need to visit Pattaya and go visit Kevin, the owner at Whiskers Bar in Soi Chaiyapoon, Central Pattaya. He is an expat Brit who will set you right with everything. Also has all the live football. By the way, I arrive there 7th June for one month. PM me for all the real details.

Just picked up on this thread.

I'm going with the family next February, 3 nights in Bangkok then 11 nights in Kata beach, Phuket.

We're staying in the southern area of Kata beach which I believe is a bit quieter but we're less than 5 mins from the town centre and 15 mins from Patong which looks rather lively.

Can't wait!

The airport is connected by the airport rail link, not the skytrain. They both connect at Phayathai.

I've been many times and still find it incredibly cheap. Bangkok is more expensive but you can still eat well there for €5 in any one of the fantastic food courts in the malls. Street food half that price. Of course Sterling has dropped, so that has added 20% to everything but 20% of not very much isn't very much. I'm from Euro land, so haven't been affected by Sterling. Taxis are cheap to use, always insist on the meter being switched on.

I stayed at kata beach about 4 weeks after the Tsunami in 2004 place was really quiet and over 75% of tourists stayed away. Kata is a nice quiet place ideal for young families and much quieter than patong, we went into phuket town and did the James bond island trip which was a good day out, back in 2004 we got 70 baht s to the pound it's about 43 baht s now, still a cheap place and has great beaches and plenty of places to visit.
Also thai people love children and I was on holiday as a family i never had any hassle.

We used the 7 eleven shops and the big c supermarket also the foodhalls in Bangkok are great you buy a top up card and load it with baht s and pick your dish and they swipe your card and it deducts It off your total.
I visit pratunum market which is one of my favourites and buy loads of clothes and t-shirts trainers, belts bags, and pretty much anything you can think off you will find most items are now fixed price but you can haggle a bit of you buy more than one item,

If you are want to watch the footie in Samui go to Premier bar banrak, emerald bar fishermans village and the islander in Chaweng. Soi 13 the sports bar Bangkok and if you go to Pattaya shooters will have all the games on and is run by a big palace fan.

All noted, thanks

Presume there is lots of choice in phuket? Also will be in Koh Samui for a week - plenty to do/visit?

Plenty to do in Samui. Angthong marine park is worth doing and maybe pop over to kho tao for some great snorkelling or diving.

Not a fan of phuket but you may well like it

Long time ago I went to samui , I remember the airport is out doors and I think it's a private run island, there two main resorts lamai or chaweng , i think chaweng was the busier of the two,

're samui supposed to be booking for next year but the Mrs has been put off by some reviews she has seen mentioning dirty beaches and oil slicks in the sea. Chaweng was where we planned to stay. Anyone got any info on the beaches?

Some people actively look for that, especially in Thailand!

Cracking country by the way. There's a brilliant purpose built foot golf course on samui. I'd recommend Ko Lipe if you can make it, especially if you like diving. It's small and less crowded than other islands.

If you're interested in learning to dive Thailand is probably best place in the world to do it. Cheap, lots of good dive shops, calm waters, lots to see. Koh Tao was where I did mine. Tao is worth going to if you have time. I preferred it to samui. Too many fat US tourists on Samui and too many big resorts. Tao has better bars and beaches IMO.

You'll have a great time. Food is amazing and cheap. Beer too. Try beer Lao if you can. Nicer than Chang,
