Rugby Union, and no time off for internationals either. And if you are an international player you'll have a summer tour or a World Cup to play on top of that. Tennis players play far, far more minutes per season than footballers. To win one Grand slam you'd play about 14-20 hours on average, which equates to about 9-13 football matches. Baseball players have 162 games per regular season. Some rugby world cups are played during our season. They also aren’t competing vs players in club & country matches vs who have had the sensible breaks.

The hectic Christmas schedule is, I believe, untouched by the proposed winter break. So why would a 2 week break in late Jan/early Feb be particularly beneficial? Doesn't seem long enough, players will need to retain high fitness, we already have 2 weeks between matches for international breaks. Yes and loads of players are on international duty or brought in for training.

It'll be a fixed window and announced before the season starts. And the holiday prices will all then cost more over that fortnight. Edited by Stuk (18 Apr 2018 5.12pm)
The worry in this scenario is that they won't announce which teams will be off for which weeks until after New Year. In terms of holiday prices I can't see it having much impact as they are largely determined by school holidays anyway. Even less so if the whole league isn't off at the same time.

And probably information to tell them rests are needed. How many sports are their where pros go full pelt like they do for 9 months with 6 weeks training beforehand? Don’t say tennis because they’re sitting out tournaments when they can and there are gaps anyway. I understand what you are saying. Just comparing it to the halcyon days when despite playing for 9 months often in clawing mud with medical science not what it is today, there were no complaints of any fatigue etc etc and the Christmas/New Year programme of games was popular with the supporters as it is today.

So it is, which is a frankly awful idea. All at the same time or not at all, it'd be a solitary weekend with not Premier league games - they'd still be able to televise other divisions.

But problem is the PL wants to maximise TV revenue, which means as few weekends off as possible and as many games on as possible. Hence this stupid staggered plan. I just hope they think of the fans who go to the games for once and have each team's break decided at the start of the season like you said.

I can't see the TV deals collapsing in value just because of a 12 day run with no Prem games. It's no different to an international window at present.

Thank F*ck for that, another season with injuries like this one and we'd be down.

Yes, should be all at the same time. There’s also going to be arguing over who’s playing who after a recent rest or a rest or rest then games.

It’s madness. A winter break has to be all teams at the same time, otherwise there will be rampant unfairness in the way the breaks fall. And I guarantee that a ‘one out, all out’ break will co-incide with the mildest winter weather on record, and then the ‘return to work’ will coincide with blizzard conditions.
