I'd rather have Oliver than Clattenberg any day.
Buffon shoved him in the back so had to go.
I just wonder what use are the goal line assistants in Euro matches. I think Atkinson was his there and maybe he concurred but we shall never know.

Buffon put/nudged his head against the back of Oliver's whilst seemingly screaming expletives at him - Oliver's reaction was to lean forward so he clearly felt it. Regardless of the player playing his last game, he had to go. Correct decision. No keeper was saving that penalty anyway.

As for the penalty, I've seen them given and I've seen them just waived on.

I don't see a shove there before the attacker goes down, though it might look like one from where the ref is standing. The defender is trying to get his foot round him to the ball and he's goal-side of him, not in his back. I had to slow it down and freeze the picture to actually see what it might have been for, so how Oliver can call it without doubt in real time is beyond me. If there's doubt you don't give it.

Still Oliver's name is all over the papers this morning and there's no such thing as bad publicity so all's well that ends well.

Dubious pen for me...I can see why it was given but for me Real players were throwing themselves to teh ground all night with Ronaldo being the worse exponent. The guy was going down before the defender touched him..

As for Buffoon...he got what he deserved; rather than argue the issue he should've been prepping himself for the penalty....idiotic response from players who are used to surrounding refs.

Shame, because all the cheating and gamesmanship ruined a great game.

Went through the back of him to get to the ball, no complaint about the penalty.

Buffon just made a fool of himself. Even more so when he did his interview today saying that the "ref should know what happened in the first leg" like he's there to rectify supposedly aggrieved decisions in a game he wasn't involved in. He then goes on to say that "he should have a certain sensitivity as there are some of the best players in the world on the pitch" And proceeds to list "Ronaldo, then himself, Navas and Chiellini" - as if they deserve special treatment.

Buffon seems to have added an extra "o" to his name. Whether the decision was wrong or right he's bound to accept it and if you lose the plot the ref won't wonder why before sending you for a shower.

Which said I do think the defender comes round the forward, he doesn't go through his back.

Thought he had an excellent game.

Got the crucial decision at the end 100% right. Took balls that. Don’t know what Buffon said but good to see a red card for such aggressive dissent for once.

Well done Michael Oliver.

As I've heard a rugby player or two say in the past, "when have you ever seen a ref change his decision after screaming in his face?"

From the goal side camera you could argue that, but the ref is on the other side. I'd still say he makes contact with the player before the ball though.

I am no Madrid fan, but i do like truth to shine through.

Nonsense, he's saying it's a clear penalty but with the benefit of YouTube slow replays and different angles, if anything your proving it wasn't clear! The player has gone down far too easy for me and under the circumstances only for an obvious foul should the pen be given

Would he have given it the other way? That would have taken real balls, no, he made the popular decision

Sponsors can't have Barca and real eliminated in the same week !

Foul for me and therefore penalty. He has shoved him in the back and great refereeing in my opinion. I will say that had it of been Wilf and we had got a pen. Opposing fans would have been asking for a 2 game ban as usual

i thought it was a foul as well, what was oliver supposed to do, ignore the abuse, keep buffon on and then he saves the pen? he made the decision fair play to him, a player as experienced as buffon should know he wouldnt change he mind

I'm still trying to work out how the 5th official in the City Liverpool game didn't notice the ball come off James Milner for the Sane disallowed goal. Seemingly they do very little or perhaps don't know the rules (the BT commentators and pundits apparently didn't either).

As for the Madrid pen, it was definitely a penalty and second yellow so he got it half right. Benati pushes Vasquez in the back and then swings a knee into his chest and isn't in control. 100% pen. The penalty itself was quality, not even Buffon would have saved it. Shame as I wanted him to miss.
