Our politicians made a big mistake in 2013 because they were too scared to go in following Iraq & Afghanistan. That opened the door for Russia. Putin will protect the totalitarian regime at any cost and now has troops with combat experience. The problem with critics of the Iraq war is that they can't say what would have happened if there wasn't an intervention. 100,000's of people have died. Almost 10 times as many as Afghanistan. They've annexed the Crimea, invaded Ukraine, shot down passenger planes and attempting assassinating people all around the world. They clearly couldn't care less about diplomacy. They just play the innocent victim every time they are called out to try an create a nationalist siege mentality amongst their people. What ever your opinion of Trump, you have to stand up to Russia.

Agreed. Obama started out soft balling them....remember that embarrassing 'reset button'? Almost as embarrassing as his appeals to Iran. Syria has been a proxy war that only one side has been taking seriously.....the appeasers have stolen defeat from a strong position when Assad was weak and ceded Syria to Russia and Iran. Other than the faux chest thumping that Trump appears fond of....I feel the west has to defend the Kurds....the only ones who seriously stood up and fought ISIS and refused to back the 'murderer of his own people' Assad.

To prevent Blair, Trump May etc. from starting wars we need a system of accountability senior to political parties.

I had so much hope when Trump came to power. Following Brexit, and then Trumps victory, I truly believed that we were on the verge of a new era, with people actually waking up to what an absolute shower of corporate sponsored s***bags our conventional political elites are. But I now fear that Trump has been effectively usurped. If there is significant military action against the Assad regime (and lets not forget that this is still the legitimate, UN recognised Government) then people need to be clear. Western airpower will be used to support the same strain of Islamic fundamentalists that support our kids being blown up at pop concerts. That actively encourage people to run amok in Borough Market with knive. And drive lorries into Christmas Fairs. And so on and on. Also can anybody explain to me why Assad, when he is on the verge of actually winning, would launch a chemical attack that serves no strategic purpose, either militarily or politically? We have been here before. There is ZERO reason for the UK to get involved in this. Assad regaining full control over Syria actually serves the UK better than any other scenario. And yet we are being prepped for yet another 'humanitarian' intervention that serves no purpose beyond some agenda that has nothing to do with what is good for the UK. Wake up people. Neither Syria or Russia are our enemies. The UK had a GDP that is twice that of Russia. No Russian has blown themselves up on a UK tube train. Or dropped bombs on London. Or generally done any harm to us. You are being taken for fools. Look up Putins speeches on You Tube. See for yourself what this supposed cross being Atilla the Hun and Adolph Hitler actually says, rather than what morons like Boris Johnson tell you

It's because America wants its oil.....despite being practically self sufficient if it wanted to be and as it is now producing 40 percent of its own oil. Persian Gulf countries don't even add up to 20 percent of US oil imports with Saudi being the highest at 9 percent. Funny that...what with all the America is in Iraq for its oil BS I had to listen to. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Apr 2018 1.56am)

He isn't 'winning' very quickly, he's trapped in a stalemate. He's spending money he doesn't have that is being provided to him by Russia who are propping up the entire effort.....Russia itself isn't doing great economically. The pressure to get a move on is significant for him....added to the fact that he and Russia can rely upon a large swell of support from appeasing opinion in the west. If the rebels had access to large scale deployable chemical weapons they would have been using them against Assad.

A united Syria under Assad would be a puppet of Russia and Iran and bring conflict against Israel closer. What serves the west better is a broken up Syria with Assad in the south and the Kurds in the eastern north.

No one can be happy with attacks on civilians and children especially. However I hope we do not get involved in military action. There are no good guys to support here. The choice is between a ruthless dictator or Islamic extremists. The so called moderates aren't that moderate either. Its a tar pit best left alone but if I had to choose I would prefer Assad because better a dictatorship than the anarchy of ISIS. Joseph Chamberlain father of Neville was Foreign Secretary and proposed a policy of "Glorious Isolation" The UK would not interfere unless we were attacked. Sounds good to me the Nordic and Scandinavian countries don't feel the need to get involved around the world and they seem to do OK. Edited by Badger11 (12 Apr 2018 8.26am)
