The Soweto uprising was a series of demonstrations and protests led by black school children in South Africa that began on the morning of 16 June 1976. 176 school children were murdered by the police on that day in Soweto, now a national holiday in South Africa, just turned up and wiped them out. This was a catalyst for change with outrage both in and outside South Africa although it took a long 14 years more.

I refuse to believe there are that many people out there that can't spell. Too f**king lazy, that's what I think. |

It was her husband, Desmond Tutu and Fw de Klerk that brought an end to apartheid. Her power was based on people fearing what she could do them, and sometimes did.

It is quite wrong to think of Mrs Mandela as a political person, an armchair activist texting on facebook or twitter, although she was the country's first black social worker and a mum of 2. She was a freedom fighter, a revolutionary who was at the heart of the anti-apartheid struggle - a brutal racist regime, a police state where they dispensed with non-whites by torture and execution as an untermensch. Why not pop in to Soweto and murder a few school-children, that's what actually happened, never mind 'necklacing'. While her husband and other ANC leaders served long jail terms Mrs Mandela was the anti-apartheid movement, for nearly 30 years. It was her calling, her life, probably her experience of torture made her hate her oppressors, gave her the fire to fight openly despite the risks. Nelson Mandela had it handed on a plate, he was equal to the task of conciliation but in the eyes of Winnie, that was not enough justice for her people. She said that it came to a point where they could not do any more to her, she broke her banning order and returned to fight on and to win, how totally improbable that must have seemed. No wonder she is 'Mother of the Nation', I think South Africans rightly award her that title. Tired old white supremacists still trying to air-brush inconvenient history away, even ambivalent to apartheid.
