The 20mph signs are a joke, they are only advisory not compulsory, as stated by Croydon Council.
It may be a radical idea, but instead of wasting money on 100s of these signs, they could use the money to repairing the crumbling road surfaces.

They aren't "only advisory", any road sign that is circular means that is in an order.

From the council's own website:
All roads in Area 4 covered by the new speed limit have 20mph signs, and drivers caught speeding by police can expect fines, points on their licence, or prosecution.

Living in Croydon, the only time I get to feel posh is when I visit Mitcham.

Widening it would mean encroaching on common land and Mitcham Golf course.

Not sure of how Common land gets re-designated (even if it can), but I do know when the council wanted to add indented bus stops along Commonside East that was a hell of a long process and consultation.

Like we had years ago, almost everywhere. Now the roads are flushed straight, as soon as a bus stops where it needs to, more often than not the rest of the traffic behind has to too.

I refuse to believe there are that many people out there that can't spell. Too f**king lazy, that's what I think.

Is the border red or green? Red is obligatory, green is advisory.

They're red. I've never heard of nor seen a green one.

Oh, we've got some round here. As it happens the roads in question are festooned with speed bumps, chicanes, abandoned Fiestas and idiots on the wrong side of the road, so you can't really do more than about 15 anyway. I think obligatory 20s are a newish thing, a city-wide 20 (30km/h) limit was trialled a few years ago in Graz, Wuppertal and some other places and was found popular, so has been rolled out elsewhere. Driving faster than 20 in Glasgow is quite hard except on the motorways (and even then not in the peak hours), and driving at all in Edinburgh at all is more or less impossible.

Roads like Purley Downs Rd are not city like at all, which you probably know. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed along there. Probably involving the over taker and the people on the other side, unless in an HGV.

In central Croydon and side streets is fair enough.

I thought buses run down Purley Downs Rd, therefore I would of thought under the jurisdiction of TFL.

Nothing to do with buses, it generally means the roads that are red routes.

Its all due to the incinerator and the lorries that need to get to it, hence widening the road, thanks tom brake for caving in !

i thought the reason beddington lane/croydon road had been closed was because there had been a "cycle way" put in between the tram stop and the junction?
( much the same as they did for the entire length of Croydon road)
if you look up the road from the junction,as far as you can see the road certainly looks narrower, which is going to be great fun when it opens again whenever that maybe!!

I have never driven in London, I only learned after I came up here. But the 20 limit was only meant to apply on urban roads, but also main thoroughfares provided they were actually built up. So the Mad Mile for example would remain mad.
