You're right in that we're at the pint in the Property cycle where we'd anticpate a plateau, before a brief surge towards the bubble burst (historical evidence suggests this) but with the added curveball of Brexit it's brought that plateau forward by a couple of years.

I would love the value of my house to drop back to what I paid for it in 1981, so that my children, who lived in it throughout childhood and adolescence, could inherit it without having to sell it in order to pay a fortune in Inheritance Tax. I suspect many will have no sympathy for me - or my children.

You could always sign it over to them in order that inheritance isn't an issue...having said that its only an issue if you leave more than £400k...

You could do that, but if you continue to live there you will have to pay them rent at market value, and they will have to pay tax on the rent as income.
The government don't miss a trick!

I agree I heard this from a tax expert on the radio. There is also something about a gift that if you die within 7 years your estate pays full tax. Doesn't seem fare that Inheritance tax was supposed to be for the rich yet many normal people especially in the SE are now in that bracket. I have a pension and no mortgage so on paper I am a millionaire doesn't feel like it though. So far the only solution I have is to take out an equity release mortgage and spend it.

Labour will hate it but if the Tories have any sense they will massively increase the inheritance tax threshold.

I do hope there aren't any British retirees moaning about this and then when it comes to building new homes on green sites near them or golf courses they're moaning about that as well.

It would remind me of the Caterham nimbys re the golf course housing plans on the chaldon road but being lib dem pro-Europe and relaxed immigration policies.

you could sell up badger and buy a nice semi in hull for 125k , one town is much like another these days, even hull i imagine, all have a nice bit away from the riff raff, you could live like a king and play golf, eat out, travel a lot more, and still have loads of dosh in the bank, happy days!
