The Russians have referred to the UK as a weak country and also issued a thinly vailed threat by reminding us that we are dealing with a nuclear super power.
The UK is also a nuclear power and in fact is economically a bigger economy than Russia.

However we appear weak to Russia simply because the only measure of a country they appreciate and respect is military clout.

In response the government should be announcing that with immediate efffect all planned/proposed military cuts are cancelled and that it response to the perceived threat military expenditure is to be increased.

Realise this would be unpopular with the treasury as well as those
who believe that such expenditure is a waste. However sometimes bullies need to be faced down and this would be a message the Kremlin, in view of their ‘Might is Right’ attitude, will understand.

(I feel better for getting that off my chest)

Russia can veto stuff, find ways round sanctions and counter expulsions. But the World Cup is the one we should go for, and trust others will follow suit.

A World Cup would still go ahead and countries would be sanctioned by FIFA, there is a track record.

Well we shouldn't have any trouble getting the USA to support it! But seriously there's next to no chance we will boycott the World Cup and even if we did, I can't see any other countries following suit and it would need a lot to do so to have any affect.

Freeze their assets, ban any direct flights, suspend any bilateral operations, call them w***ers at the UN etc.

Still can't believe that something believed to be wiped on a door handle can actually be so devastating. The Litvinenko and Kim Jong-Nam ones are more easy to comprehend as they were ingested and sprayed in his face respectively.

Optimistic as ever

It strikes me as strange that the method of murder was something that could so readily be traced back to Russia. If they were to admit it I could see why, but they're not. If they wanted to kill someone anonymously then buying a gun on the black market, shooting the victim and then leaving on the next plane would seem more sensible.

Maybe Russia wants it to be know that they can reach anyone they choose wherever they are. They can deny any knowledge but their point has been made in a way a mafia style hit wouldn’t.

How’s that for a conspiracy theory !

Probably close to the truth.

Why do we always need an enemy? Russia being the latest example.

I think that was already taken as fact from the previous killing of Alexander Litvinenko so doing it again and making it so obvious seems pointless.

The difference is that Skipal was part of a swap. There has historically been a gentleman's agreement that those involved in swaps are left alone to see out their retirement

It is alleged that Putin wants people to know that no matter how long it takes, retribution will be served. You cross mother Russia and you will spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder

I see your point but wasn't that the threat given with the previous murders. I'd guess that anyone in the spying business knows that they will never be safe if they are perceived as traitors.

No GrandMaster would make this move so why would Russia do this at this particular time?

We'll soon see more international trades in the petro-yuan (the Chinese currency) replacing the US petro-dollar. Others that have tried to escape from the rancid burden of the US petro-dollar for many years now include Iraq, Iran, Syria and Libya.

To nick a quote from a previous post.........''coincidence''?

Edit: Or maybe a deliberate 'internal' exercise to avoid Brexit?
