Blind optimism is not helpful.

I have not seen any of the optimists state that our team is better than the others.

I agree,in the the cold light of day,who is going to score the goals to keep us up?

Willo and I are about the same age I think and so he will have seen us relegated seven times as I have. So it is possible that this year, particularly after the lack of summer business, the start and performances sans WZ, and the window, some warning bells have started to chime - it doesn't stop us being passionate fans - I can both point to some pretty desperate seasons. I don't feel like I'm doom and gloom - but until we're statistically safe, I think we're in serious trouble. I'm happy to debate - but I struggle to see how my view can be construed in any way as not being a fan.

Chris, likewise I've been through the same as yourself and Willo. My comment regarding Willo was merely in jest and I certainly don't think I'm any better a fan than the next man. I come home after every game with a raging sore throat due to constantly backing our boys, even at my age! I will continue to do so even if relegation possibly happens. I'm also a passionate fan but, as has been stated previously, I've seen it all before and no doubt will see it again and have learned not to take football too seriously. Football for me is about so much more;meeting new fans from local and abroad(hello Simon);pre-match beers;going to matches with family and friends;seeing old faces and reminiscing;the evolution of our wonderful club;the next prospect coming through etc.I am also the eternal optimist and have a 'never say die' attitude with a smile on my face. There's not much we as fans can do but get behind the boys right until the last whistle of the final game. Que sera sera. Ollie's Dad,Ash.

I'm definitely feeling more optimistic after the results today, even though Swansea won, they were not our biggest concern even though they have leapfrogged us. Both Stoke and Southampton have horrendous run ins which i think will see them both go down. West Brom are already down. We are having our tough games right now, but we have the best run in and if we get a few of our injured players back for our last 6 games i'm confident we will stay up on around 38 points

I don't know. Stoke have Shaqiri who finds the net, they have Choupo-Moting who finds the net, they have Diouf who finds the net. Even Crouch and Jese are players who can come from the bench and score.

Who finds the net for Palace if Zaha is out?
Having a good defense is good, but 3 points are better than 1. Gathering points to finish ahead of the last 3 pretty much requires scoring.

Southampton have a lot of good players up front too: Charlie Austin, Carrillo, Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Gabbiadini.

I think these teams are in a better position to hope than us. But we have to fight till the end, you never know. We could do a Burnley and win 7 times with 1-0

It's not always like that . Especially when the club does not have a great academy and the recent success is the lucky product of one generation- in this case 1 man, Zaha. I've seen clubs go from the PL to League One or League Two in a few years because of the lack of a good generation.

After Zaha leaves, staying up in the Championship may be a challenge. It depends how the money got for him will be spent, but looking at the recent transfer windows, they will probably not be put to god use. The board is simply not good at doing tranfers.

And it's frustrating because staying up in the PL would have been so easily achieved....The team was having a great resurgence, Roy Hodgson had taken it from bottom last to more than 20 points in very little matches, the morale was positive, everything was good. All the board needed to do was make sure in the winter transfer that they have all positions covered in case Zaha gets injured. Same with the striker, everyone saw that Benteke was having a bad season. Niasse was available for 12 million in January 1st, then they asked for 15 after he started scoring for Everton, but it would still have been important business. Necessary business. Sorloth is one for the future, but a striker who can score was needed now. And there simply is no cover in the squad for Zaha or Townsend. McArthur or RLC have been forced to play on the wing all season. The winter transfer was to correct such things.

It just would have been so easy. And now it's all so hard to finish above Swansea, Bournemouth, Brighton, Huddersfield or Newcastle. Maybe you weren't 100% sure even with some real wingers transfered to cover for Zaha, but it didn't need to be very expensive ones. Just regular wingers used to scoring or assisting. Narsingh would have cost like 4-5 million, Rolando Aarons 1-2 million, Matt Ritchie 8-9 million, Schurrle loan was even possible at one point with only his salary supported (but hey, if it takes you weeks to decide surely some other Borussia players will get injured and they'll pull the plug on him leaving)

After watching Southampton v Stoke, Danny Murphy thinks they'll both survive. So where does that his mate Roy's Palace? Or does he think Newcastle and Huddersfield will drop.

Would love to know what he thinks now. He may be on talkshyte on Monday or Tuesday morning.

Need to score more than the odd penalty to stay up. We can’t hit fvcking barn door. Not just Benteke.

Indeed and thank you for coming back. Some on here can be quite spiteful - and not always in jest sadly, we really should celebrate diversity of views - well all except one!

Just done an analysis on games after this weekend is over, on the basis of the lower 12 clubs still looking over their shoulder, is that despite 31pts Brighton have the most difficult task with 5 of the top 6 to play and with Everton, Leicester & Burnley has left it a tough schedule. By the same token the Hammers have 4 and apart from Palace the others have 3. Palace have 2 after the Man U Match tommorrow. I forecast despite injuries its the best home run of all the others, with some very achievable confrontations. After the Liverpool match on the 1st April, its very dooable?
as the rest have to go to the wire with the stacksofmoulee games. So I'm optimistic 9 to 12 pts will do it from here on in. A point at least from MU will be a bonus Eagles forever!!

The thing with the run in as that we have as good a chance as the opposition in most of remaining games to get points, once you take out the Man utd, Liverpool and Chelsea games. In theory we should also have significant 1st team players back. If we have Zaha, Tomkins, Sakho, Townsend, Cabaye, Luka, RLC and McArthur available, then yes, we are better than at least five of the bottom half teams in my opinion. The big key of course will either be Bentenke discovering some late form, or Sorloth taking up the mantle. Speaking of the new lad, he has only had once proper chance in his two starts so far and even that was a half-chance header, but I think he looks a very cool character which gives me confidence that once he isn't being asked to play wide left he will start to score.

Since Roy has come in we have looked the better team against most of the teams in the bottom half, as well as against the likes of Leicester and Burnley. Why people suddenly think we're terrible because we lost to Arsenal, Spurs and away to Everton seems odd to me. The only reason we're not already comfortable is a failure to take our chances and turn some of our draws into wins. Every player including the new GK are coming out and saying the team spirit is good, which again gives me a lot of hope, as that can be a big factor. Also the whole Zaha thing is not considered in the context of him being out during the early games of the season when we were in chaos and the recent games where we were unlikely to get results anyway. Against smaller teams having two giants up front will not be attractive but it will likely cause problems.

And so completes my essay on why Palace have a strong fighting chance.
