I've found the whole winter sports spectacle absolutely riveting and wonder how they manage to avoid terrible injuries. Unfortunately, I'm now too old for most of it but the "bowls on ice" is genteel by comparison and I'd love to give it a go. Edited by Henry of Peckham (21 Feb 2018 7.15pm) You say its genteel but I have seen occasions when the curling stick has been thrown down in frustration! Like most sports the more you watch it the more you understand the tactics and why they have done what they have to enjoy it.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |

I've actually quite enjoyed it. I liked the event where they come down head first on what looks like the type of tray I eat my dinner off... Crazy f***ers!! In all honesty they may not be sports in the limelight but these men and women are still athletes who require a huge amount of skill and bravery.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Still a lot of very hard men at the pinnacle of the sport though and "you want to go?" is often all the prompting needed. Minor league hockey isn't a million miles away from the carnage of Slap Shot and Goon even now. Top level hockey in Scandinavia, Russia and Central Europe is more finesse and less brutal, as the rinks are bigger. Still, the skill and speed of the NHL is a whole other level. I've always liked the Winter Olympics, and especially enjoy the snowboarding events. The snowboard cross is maybe my favourite, every race is so unpredictable and always entertaining to watch. Same with the ski cross. The snowy mountain backdrops for many events are stunning to look at, too. As much as I also enjoy the more popular Summer Olympics, I think the wintry locations help make the winter games a much better spectacle. It's also been a welcome break from the soap opera of the Premier League for a while. An elite sporting event I can just watch and enjoy without the usual stress!

If anyone is interested in watching some live Ice Hockey, Streatham are playing at home tomorrow at 5:30 its £10 for adults to get in & its a quality night out, there is a pub just round the corner called the Earl Ferrers which is a bit of a hidden gem & a perfect place to get a beer before the game. If anyone is keen on coming along give me a shout I'll be there tomorrow like always & will happily give you a few pointers with rules and what not. The speed, accuracy, hand to eye coordination & just the sheer brutality of hockey will blow you away. I love it
The mountains are calling & I must go. |

Blimey. I didn't remember the name but that's the pub we used to go to occasionally back in the 80s when I lived around the corner in Lewin Road. It was a boring old mans pub then which would suite me down to the ground now! There was another very small pub on Sunnyhill Road, do you know if that's still going?
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

loved it apart form Clare Balding, who a really can't stand as a presenter.
