My word, even if I was related to Jeff Stelling, in his interests I wouldn't advertise this on HOL !

I can just feel the sensitivity of this subject oooooozing from the page from those of you who have dared to comment.

Sad....very sad especially when I consider the football I grew up watching that has now long gone.

PC, modern world, mad world, WE ARE ALL SUPPRESSED.

To be perfectly honest I get my jolly cross knobs on when I think of all this PC hogwash.I have vented my spleen umpteen times outside of HOL.Makes my blood boil.

Only last weekend my dear wife urged me to "Zip it" as I launched into a tirade which she has been subjected to on a regular basis.

Anyway let's move away from my abhorrence of this PC hogwash - I believe it has been well documented on HOL.

Just been watching WBA v Ston on BT.
The commentator is a female......Robyn something.
I know we are living in a mad PC world and BT probably think it is wise to put on a female for a bit of balance, but come on BT her voice and commentary is like listening to some kind of funeral march. Dull, depressing, and generally very boring.
Soory Robyn, nothing personal, but give me John Motson etc any day over that.
Made me realise just how good most football commentators are......and yes they are ALL male.
I honestly think the female voice is lacking on many fronts to deliver on football. Call me sexist go on miss my point. Throw the pathetic PC book at me why don't ya.
Hey ho sorry ladies, just my personal opinion.

Sounded like she was reading off a script. Like she had learned all the old cliched comments are wanted to get them all in.

Football commentators in general wind me up, especially those fcukers on MOTD who have had several hours between the game ending and the program showing to edit the game and to dazzle us with their insider knowledge. Like picking out a player on the bench and wondering out loud if this player will make a difference, knowing full well he scores the winner, barsteds. Sorry, just finished a crappy night shift and me back hurts.

Most of the women commentators in the US are either studio hosts like Rebecca Lowe (NBCSN) or "color" match commentators like Julie Foudy on ESPN. I don't know of a play-by-play announcer for soccer on American TV.

Jeez, I knew you guys had Spanish commentary but having separate commentators for the white and coloured folk is a bit much!

(what the hell is a "colour" commentator?)

It's what they call the announcer who explains and gives their opinion along side the play by play announcer. One of the most famous in the US who "never played the game" was Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football starting in 1970. John Madden, who lent his name to a video game series, was one after he retired from being the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

So in terms of golf coverage on CBS, is that Nick Faldo or Dottie Pepper?

I don't watch golf but I believe both would be as would Peter Alliss if he's still round. At least he was when he worked for the American ABC Network at the Open. "Play by play" announcers for golf over here include Jim Nance of CBS, who does the Masters. In the US, John Motson and Brian Moore would be play by play announcers while Jimmy Hill and Ian St John would be commentators. For the EPL on NBC(SN), Arlo White does play by play while Lee Dixon and/or Graeme LeSaux do color. The studio crew usually broadcasts from Stamford, CT and is made up of Rebecca Lowe hosting and two of the following three serving as analysts: Robbie Earle, Robbie Mustoe and Kyle Martino. Earle & Mustoe also do "The Two Robbies" programme on NBC Sports Radio which is mostly heard online as NBC sold off all of its radio stations back in the 1980s. "The Two Robbies" is also podcasted.
