What I find pretty mental is that I've just restarted driving again after more than a decade without doing so at all and I was able to get insured and just start driving on the road without having to have any refresher lessons if I didn't want to.

That's not as bad as letting people from abroad drive over here on some foreign licences, as Mexico for example doesn't bother with driving tests. Even some US states are as basic as drive down there and come back, in an automatic.

What I also find odd is that the day you pass you're pretty much considered as good for the next 50 years. And even then you just have to tell them you think you're fine to carry on, in your own opinion.

And then when a pensioner runs someone over and kills them they decide that perhaps they weren't so fine after all.

Optimistic as ever

Monday went well
Tuesday she drove around the locale and passed her theory test.
Final test booked for Friday

Today she wrote the instructors car off by driving into a brick wall. The exam has been postponed

no-one injured

Firstly at least noboby was injured.
Your wife should get at least a couple of days course fee refund as she only lasted until Wednesday and a test fee refunded as well!

I think it's madness that in priciple, someone can take a 7 day intensive driving course at 17 years old, pass their test, then as long as they renew their license every 10 years can then jump in a car 52 years later and take to the motorway.

I passed my motorbike test over 50 years ago driving a Lambretta and despite not have driven on two wheels since then I am still licenced to ride the biggest, baddest motorbike that I can get hold of which is probably why so many people suffering from a mid life crisis try to recapture their youth by buying a motorbike and kill themselves on it

Yeah but you don't learn to drive in the first seven days, it is assumed people become good drivers with years of experience, the test is just to show you are safe and not a complete numpty

Yup. We of the older generation had it very easy. Passing a test now, for riding a bike, towing a trailer, driving a minibus and driving a 7.5 tonner is very tough.

We never had to take an online theory test and were only asked four or five questions on the Highway Code as part of the test.

In those days we had to do a "Three point turn" which if I am not mistaken is now referred to as changing direction using forward and reverse gears or words to that effect. We also had to do reversing around a corner. There was mention of changing the test to make it more relevant to current driving situations but I really don't know if this has been done.

But in our day we never had forward and reverse sensors !

Maybe, I dunno, my old dad back in the day said in the sixties he had to hold the car on the biting point on a hill whilst not driving over two match boxes placed under the front and rear car tyres for five mins. Only then did he pass

First time I have heard of this pass criteria.
I passed my test (First time) in the 70s.

As 'Criterion' is the plural of 'Criteria' and I was making reference to a single judgement in relation to the test is the correct word 'Criteria' ? Long time since I was in the classroom !!!!! Let's not focus on grammar and concentrate on the subject matter.

Willo, you are confused, old boy.

Criterion is the singular form.
Criteria is the plural.

Here endeth the lesson.
