There has much been mentioned in this post about passing the ball. For a while I have been singing the praises of Shelvey who would be very effective for us.I accept he has his problems on the pitch with discipline but my goodness his range of passing is to be admired. He was MOM against Man Utd today ! I totally agree that we needed to strengthen the midfield 'Engine Room' - we signed Rakip but he hasn't played since November/December. I think you've missed my point a little bit as I'm saying Cabaye is good enough and can make those passes like Shelvey. Shelvey was great at passing against us and even better against United today, I won't argue at this stage of their careers, he wouldn't be an upgrade on Cabaye. However, Shelvey isn't a miracle worker. He would come in and soon realise the passes he is capable of just aren't there. There is no through ball for Shelvey to play because Benteke doesn't move. There is no attacking midfielder to inter-link with because we don't have one. Shelvey would come in, realise there's no point trying to set Benteke away as he never runs and soon start playing basic balls between himself and Luka and the inevitable wide ball to Wilf and Townsend. Then a few months down the line someone would start a topic called 'Shelvey' asking has he been a massive dissapointment. We could have prime Pirlo in our central midfield, there is NO ONE UPFIELD FOR HIM TO PASS TO. Very unfair on Cabaye this topic.

Let me assure you, I won't lose any sleep over the fact that you couldn't care a jot what I think. Now let's get back to the subject matter - This thread is about Cabaye and NOT about your mindset in relation to my posts. Edited by Willo (12 Feb 2018 12.40am)

He's one of the few players we have who is decent at maintaining possession and rarely gives the ball away stupidly. We have a lot of problems, but Cabaye isn't one of them. But I agree his set pieces are so bad, I have no idea why he keeps taking them. He hasn't kicked a decent corner all year. Get someone else to do it.

This is a list of our outfield players that can hit a dead ball consistently well. Milivojevic,

All our midfielders, but especially Cabaye, would look better if the movement up front was better. All our midfielders massively dropped down when Ian Wright left because there was nobody giving them a smart & easy pass into a dangerous space. Let's see what Hodgson does about Sorloth.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Pretty much how I view it - I think he's our best passer in nearly every game - the floated ball to Benteke on Saturday was class, and leads to a goal 90% of the time.

Cabaye at this stage of his career would be very useful for us coming off the bench with say 15 mins to go when we perhaps needed to get a goal against opponents who might be flagging. At the present, our injury situation means there is no alternative but to start him. He has that ability to pick a pass but at 31 I'm not sure about his effectiveness over 90 mins. Edited by Willo (12 Feb 2018 9.45am)
