Thanks Wallington this sounds promising as his name was also spelt incorrectly against Sevenoaks where he was named CURNEY!!!

Finally, these early season programmes displayed a full list of Palace players, headed "Many New Names", including 4 "on trial" - sadly Jim isn't among them.

I hope this helps and the mention of "KENNEY" in the previous post could be gold dust!

It was a friendly between Sevenoaks v Crystal Palace "A"

The date matches up for 1948 but we weren't in the same league as Sevenoaks.

We drew 1-1 with Millwall at Selhurst the same day.

Is there somewhere I can browse through these "Club Gossip" sheets?? Maybe I can find something in earlier or later games!

We played Watford on the following Saturday, 4th Sept, and while on Page 3 in Club Gossip there is talk of the previous weekend's fixtures, there is no mention of the A team game at Sevenoaks.

You either need to buy all the relevant programmes, or persuade someone to scan them all for you.

Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell.

The Palace v Swindon programme 30.10.48 is on Ebay now @ £20

The Palace v Swansea prog 25.8.48 is here on Ebay @ £27

That was the first home game of the season, not the Millwall game which I referred to yesterday (senior moment) but there is no reference to any A team football in the Club Gossip report. I'm sending you a direct message about this.

Didn't know "athletic club" as well, was part of the name back then?
Thought it was always just Crystal Palace football club.

When was athletic dropped?

So can someone with historical knowledge please tell me why it appears on that invitation/ call up to Jim/James Kearney

Ok, it was when the Nest was subleased from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, the parties being The Croydon Common Football and Athletic Company Limited and then Crystal Palace Football and Athletic Club.
The lease stipulated that the ground could only be used for soccer or athletics or for "the holding of Flower Shows and School treats"

Thanks all for helping out

Club historian Ian King has sent an email reply on behalf of the club (re Jim Kearney). I am sure that an acknowledgement would be appreciated.

We were definitely Crystal Palace football and athletic club.
Playing for the A team was like playing for the youth team but without age limit and not professional players.
