Palace has had the two best keepers not picked by their respective countries: John Jackson and Juliam Speroni. In Speroni's case, Argentina's managers simply didn''t like him because he played in both Scotland and England. They let politics get in the way of picking the most qualified. Jackson was before my time. Palace also had some great keepers in the pre-WWII era.

In my period of watching Palace: 1. Nigel Martyn: Was just so solid and dependable, won so many points on his own. Seem to recall a cold dark night at old Ayresome Park when he single handedly won us precious points. 2. Jules: Funny thing is when he first came he looked distinctly dodgy and was dropped. Don't think any of us thought then what a solid and dependable member of the squad he has been. In his heyday it seemed he was linked to leave us but never did and in his later years it has been a constant question of how we could replace him. 3. Alex Kolinko: TBH Nige and Jules are streaks ahead of anyone else but for sheer entertainment I loved watching Kolinko. Saw him at Newcastle where he raced off his line to the byline to slide tackle Bellamy, then had to run full pelt back to the goal to save a header from (I think Nobby Solano). Was utter madness and the only time I can recall the opposition fans applauding a save! 4. Gabor Kiraly: Made me feel better to wear jogging bottoms when playing in goal for my 5-a-side team. 5. John Salako: Yep believe it or not I recall little Salako donning the gloves in a local derby v Wimbledon. `OK lads we have lost our keeper...who shall we put in goal? I know lets pick our tiny, skillfull winger` Seemed to work well though and memory tells me he made at least one good save and I think we won 3-2.

Sadly due to injury finishing his career we didn't see him enough but I believe Matt Clarke would be on this list.

After going down 1, Nigel Martyn was shown a straight red card by referee David Elleray for a foul outside the box. However, with the score knotted at one after a Bright shot creeped over the line, the Dons Terry Phelan handled a Mark Bright shot on the line, which resulted in his sending off on the "Maradona" rule. The resulting penalty was converted by Andy Gray to give Palace a 2-1 lead. Then Wimbledon lost another man to a second bookable offence and Palace widened its lead to 3-1 before NBC's pundit Robbie Earle pulled one back with a free header that Salako could only watch. With time running down, the Don's super-sub, Alan Cork (dad of Jack) had a dead cert equaliser saved by the quick right arm of Salako, earning chants of "England's Number 1" from the Selhurst faithful. The fixture ended 3-2 to Palace, repeating the fireworks of the previous year's home fixture, also won by Palace 4-3.

England did not have a couple of better keepers at the time of ‘Jacko’. If Sir Alf had picked him instead of bonetti for the 1970 world cup as number two to Banks, we would not have lost to West Germany, and that little s*** Gerd Mueller would have been smashed all over the penalty area! Absolutely right,Jacko was way better than Bonetti, the unfashionable club syndrome again.

Which Leeds player was it that the normally quite mild Jacko wanted to thump? Might have been the game John Craven got taken out more than once.

Was a previous season when Jacko practically knocked out Jackie Charlton by punching a corner clear through Charlton's head. Jacko got really p***** off with Charlton blocking him on corners.

Cheers - happy to be corrected! There's a famous photo I remember, but haven't seen it in years. The incident I remember was when Jacko reacted to a bad challenge from Brian Joicey of Coventry back in '71. Very unlike Jacko who is the best and most consistent Palace keeper that I've seen in 54 years of supporting us. Attachment: utils.jpg (105.39Kb)
A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas! |
