Good post Eagle Phil.
Our problem moving forward from this (hopefully) one off defeat is a lack of players.
We don't just have a lot of injuries but injuries to very key players
Sakho
Cabaye (maybe)
RLC
Townsend
Schlupp
Others are more bench players now but the total is horrible - not the worst in the Prem but pretty unbearable to a squad with our lack of quality in depth.
If we cannot get some players in who can hit the ground running then we might have a problem.
We also seem to start games slowly and Arsenal took full advantage on Saturday - game over in the first 20 minutes.
Opposition Managers with nous will try the same thing.
We have as good a chance as ten other teams of staying up or going down but we need to change those odds in our favour and get 3/4 half decent players in asap.

If you just go for the opposite of the results that i predict, you will never be wrong

Indeed.

Despite such an excellent run we are still just 3 pts from safety and with all our injuries and our main striker having only scored 1 goal all season, we simply cannot hope to carry on with such a sequence of results with our current squad. Our only hope is to strengthen significantly and hope the players that are brought in perform to the required standard.Failures in the transfer market will lead to relegation.Sounds very negative but I am trying to be realistic.

Why? Our current squad are the ones who have performed to take us on that great run, and it's not like we got particularly lucky in that run, we could have easily won more of those games.

A team who has played consistently pretty well all season is not going to suddenly turn into a terrible team.

We need some transfers in, that's for sure, but when the injuries ease off I have great faith we will stay up. In terms of transfers, we need depth - I think if we bought a back up striker, back up defender and back up keeper we would still be fine this season. Tekkers will start scoring, especially when Andros is back in the team

With respect I wasn't advocating that we would evolve into a "Terrible team".

I was merely questioning our ability to maintain the level of performance and results we have witnessed over the past 13 games recognising that teams sometimes go through a sticky patch after a sequence of impressive results.

We've been in mid table and above form.

Now we need survival form.

Done.

Thank you Rudi. In my view, there would have to be a significant drop off in our performances for us to drop below survival form (roughly 1 point per game).

There has been no indication from these last 4 months that we are going to drop off like that

Injuries ? We have half the first team out now ,Mama, Joel Ward,Scott Dann,Schluppy,RLC, Yohan, Punch, Andros, Connor Wickham (If he counts !) with a few of those not back for a while if not the rest of the season. If we had a mostly fit squad then we'd be fine, but I'm beginning to get nervous.

Yes that is a concern, but still not enough (in my eyes) to turn our form completely into less than a point a game from here on in.

Would take a few more injuries I think, first 11 at the moment is still strong (especially considering Andros and Ward are back, hopefully Cabaye not gone long too)

The team have been playing cup-finals week in, week out since Roy took over. This is not sustainable and I can see us having a run of defeats following our good recent form. However, if we can get a couple of new first teamers in this window and they start well then that could pull the team through and avoid the bad run.

For the first time this season I actually don't think we will go down as I think we will have a good spell of results towards the end of the season when some of our injured return to fitness.

We need to stop giving up the first goal within the first few minutes, we really do.

I agree. I think a spanking when players are starting to relax a little prematurely in the season will hopefully focus a few minds.

An article which sums up my feelings quite nicely. Except that I dont think there is anything called mid table mediocrity any more. I think its either top eight or so clubs spending zillions, or all the other clubs any three of which could go down if they hit a bad run of form, loads of injuries, a poorly timed managerial appointment. Etc. In Palace´s case, we made a disastrous managerial appointment followed by the excellence which Hodgson has provided and a very good but small squad undermined by injuries. I really think the next week will determine whether we stay up or get sucked into a dire relegation battle until the last game. If we can get 5 or 6 very good players in then we should be OK. If we dont, or the new players we bring in dont perform then...
