Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I don't recall ever purchasing a 'Red Rover' ticket.

I recall the tickets issued by conductors on their silver machines on the end of straps around their necks. The conductor used to turn the dial for the correct fare, turn a handle and the ticket would emerge ! Probably many on here were not around in those days.

Ticket machines!
What about the pre printed tickets clipped into the holder which the conductor took aout and punched.
My uncle was a clippy and gave me a holder full of used bus tickets when I was a kid.

In the early 70s, the 196 went from NJ to Tuffnell Park, curtailed to Brixton Gresham Road in about 1973.

The 68, at its longest, ran from South Croydon Garage to Chalk Farm.

I know some fascinating facts about this process. As you will know, Rob, each ticket was a different colour, depending on the fare/distance travelled - so a one penny fare might be yellow, 'tuppence' might be purple, and so on.

When the clippy got back to base, the contents of their machine (i.e. all the 'punchings') were emptied out in front of an 'accounts person', who then had to sort the tiny bits of paper into their respective colours, count them all up and reconcile the 'expected' total fares with the cash handed in by the clippy. All without a calculator or Excel spreadsheet, of course.

Try telling that to kids today!

According to the London Transport Museum (as it was called when I visited, and where I learned all this) the accounts people were always women, because apparently their colour differentiation is better that that of men - certainly on that minute scale.

Me again!

A good few years ago, there was a photoshoot in a (a-hem) 'gentlemen's lifestyle magazine' of the actress who played 'Olive' in 'On the Buses'. Even though her character was deliberately unattractive, I believe that out of character, the actress had a certain charm.

Anyway, there was a photo of her on the cover of the magazine, with the caption:

"Plenty of room on top!" It's Olive from On the Buses!

The double-entendre used was another cry of the Routemaster conductor or conductress.

We had some fun days out back then and only cost a couple of bob. Visits to the Post Office Tower and the Monument I recall.
