Damo is a hero but asking him to come in from the cold against a PL side was always going to be tough. Most players need a game or two to get back to their best and, at almost 37 years of age and never having been quick in the first place, it was a huge ask. He still managed a few good blocks but the ring rust was apparent. The wider issue was that it meant we defended super deep and often hit it long and aimlessly forward. I'm sure Roy knows Damo's limits and will use him appropriately.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

This - not playing regualrly due to injury, or just lack of opportunity, makes it difficult to suddenly perform in the first team. |Maybe even more so at 35+.

I feel that he has definitely lost an edge being clean shaven like that as well.

Yeah he was great for us and cried at Wembley etc etc etc but there is no reason why he should still be here, he was finished at least a year ago. Liability now.

Gotta take issue with that. He had his moments. I remember he put Diego Costa in his pocket a couple of seasons back at Stamford Bridge. Top draw performance. But he's not up to scratch now. Wish we'd played a youngster instead. He'd now have experience. The post you are reacting to was relating to Kaikai being out of his depth, not Delaney.

Kaikai seemed out of his depth but it is reasonable to ask why Damo had a million quid extension when he was past it. Where does charity begin and business sense end?
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I'm disgusted with some of the abuse this veteran is currently getting now. Some idiots claiming that he got picked for errm dodgy reasons. Ridiculous. He got picked because we need Tomkins fully fit in the absence of Sakho and Dann. He's too old and has just come back from an operation, WTF do people expect? I think he's one of those whose experience helps the younger players and may have taken over from Jedinak the role of dressing-room seargeant-major. He was also treated appallingly at that Sunderland game last season. His powers may have waned but he's more than earned our respect over the years. I've seen Damo put his body in the way of shots more times than I can remember over the years. So many times our #27 has been there for a last ditch tackle, header, clearance and even to score the odd goal. Yes, I know it's been his job but please don't anybody say he doesn't care. Maybe age is catching up with him - but let's face it, what match practice does he get these days, anyway? Time to go? Quite probably. Edited by jhillman (10 Jan 2018 4.58am)

Delaney has not played in months; he has been operated on recently (apparently) and on Monday night was put into central defence in a patched up team in front of a not very good keeper and is suddenly expected to perform.

Erm how is it charity or him being a liability if he is the only option we have? The point of extending his contract was clearly because Parish didn't plan on bringing another defender in besides Sakho. So our options right now would be have Tomkins and Kelly as our only defenders or have Delaney in reserve for injuries or POINTLESS cup games. He wasn't a liability because him playing meant Tomkins absolutely did not get injured. If we have the money to replace these ageing players then let them go but it's clear we don't because I tell you who I'd love on our bench Saturday - Delaney, Jedinak and Murray. If we had that last old past it player that we clearly didn't bother to replace we'd still be in the FA Cup.
