I thought they treated Luke terribly in this movie by the way....No wonder Hamil was p1ssed off. Hamill has criticized it as much as he is contractually allowed to. Daisy Ridley wants nothing to do with Star Wars once this trilogy is up too. Did anyone else catch the irony about Disney lecturing us all about the evils of capitalism on the Casino planet?

Yep, they brought politics into a simple bit of fun...spoiled it......progressivism infects everything......next we've Donald Duck taking a knee.

Actually, they're lifted from Samurai movies - Star Wars itself is basically a rip off of 'The Hidden Fortress'. The presence of women, as key players in the Star Wars universe is pretty common. The rebel alliance is led by Mon Martha and Princess Leia is one of its key generals. Not because thats realistic, but because its Space Opera, its not supposed to be taken too seriously. Plus there have been female Jedi in the cannon for bloody donkey's years - even before it was cool to be all alt-right male power.

Surely Jedi are the ultimate in liberal left? Hemp dress, sandals and embracing some kind of force agenda politic I have them as the religious right. They bow down before an old religion, resist change, and perpetuate a conflict bringing death and chaos to untold millions of lives. Much better to let the empire sort things out and restore stability to the universe. That way people could go about their daily lives in peace and stability.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

Plus there have been female Jedi in the cannon for bloody donkey's years - even before it was cool to be all alt-right male power. This is not wrong, but "A New Hope" is rightly criticized for being a blizzard of white, male characters. Leia, for example, was one of only two female characters with a speaking role in ANH (the other being Aunt Beru). In "Empire" there is only one other female character with a name! She's a rebel officer who gives one, short line of technobabble about controlling fire from the ion cannon. Mon Mothma is the only not-Leia female character with lines in "Return of the Jedi". In fact, out of 386 minutes of the original trilogy, female voices other than Leia's account for a total of 63 seconds - half of which belong to Beru, who was offed about half way through the first movie. [Link] Maybe it just looks like Disney is laying it on a bit thick in the new trilogy, because having non-white and, particularly, non-male characters is such a stark contrast to the original trilogy. Actually, they're lifted from Samurai movies. Yeah all those Samurai female warriors......though conceptually with the force being the prime weapon the gender is less important...as its fantasy. Still, the Star Wars modern day narrative is a 'progressive' one.....it's been admitted to as much once it started. The originals are so much better than these new ones.

Onna Bugeshia is the correct term for female warriors of the Japanese noble classes (Female Samurai essentially). Not as common after the Edo period, they certainly existed - Enough that they have a specific term and weapon style (the naginata rather than the Katana).

But lets be honest here. The Jedi are far closer to Buddhist warrior monks than they are to Samurai. Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Dec 2017 11.18am)
