There speaks someone who isn't self employed. And HMRC are moving towards quarterly bills with making tax digital. However HMRC being HMRC have made a total F******* of it. Along with the messed up IR35 regulations it's a melting pot of crap.

But with a 30% withholding tax herein lies the issue.

I send you a bill for £20k. I've got £20k of profit and the tax that comes associated with it.

However until you pay me I've got no cash.

Yes they should in an ideal world put a withholding tax on it like in the construction industry, but bearing in mind the amount of s*** genuine small businesses are having to put up with then the last thing you need to do is make life harder for them.

It won't hit people who evade tax (via cash in hand) as you will then be expecting householders (Joe Public) to deduct 30% and what are the odds of that getting paid over.

It won't affect the big companies as they will be exempt.

So what you will hit is the genuine self employed persons who are already at breaking point.

Personally I'd go for flat taxation system - and that's from someone who makes his living because tax is complicated.

I've been self employed for the last 25 years.

When do you think the EU will get around to abolishing self-employment?

Actually, since I moved to the Eurozone around 20 years ago my business has boomed. Plenty of tax breaks for the self employed in many EU countries. No nonsense such as IR35 and easy peasy to set up a business in many EU countries. Best thing we ever did. How's Thornton Heath nowadays?

Vibrant and diverse I understand. A fine example of multi-culturalism in action with no 'community' problems whatsoever.
Interesting program on the radio about Malta today, painted the place as corrupt and f-uped.

In my experience of living in several EU countries, no more than anywhere else and often much less. The UK really does have an 'us and them' mentaity, one of the reasons I decided to move my family away all those years ago. My friends who still live there say it's much, much worse now. Still, you obviously fit in very well there and like it

I haven't been in Thornton Heath for 20 years (apart from some Palace games). Any journalists been murdered by the local mafia lately?

I'm sure if you are in the wrong circle you could be in a bit of bother.
It does go on but isn't reported in capital letters until it's solved.

I half think this could be good and I think Scotland is more in favour of redistribution of income, but I also cannot stop thinking that a major factor of this is down to sturgeon and the SNP's poor governance. Over £30k in Scotland and you're probably considered a toff lord.

Strange choice of middle class tax payers by a Scottish Tory mp today using a school head paying £600 more a year but not mentioning their teacher staff or nurses paying less. We'll see how this goes.

Agree 100% cash flow is king especially if people you invoice are late payers.
