I suspect that my political views were influenced by my middle-class and privileged background with my parents being professionals and mixing in those circles. For avoidance of doubt, this does not elevate me to a status above those of working-class stock.

I have been a dyed-in-the-wool Conservative for as long as I can remember and I am unashamedly on the Thatherite right-wing of the party - and a Brexiteer ! I am a member of the party, take an active role and of course campaign at elections both national and local.

The dastardly Corbyn and all that left-wing hogwash is anathema to me, always has been and always will be.My wife tires of my vituperation and vitriol which I direct in that direction often with a raised voice in front of the TV or having perused the papers. !

I try and stay clear of political debates on here as there is every chance they would evolve into WILLO threads and as a such would veer well off the subject matter.Accordingly in the interests of HOL this is my last post on this thread.

Some of my family fought against da brits. Some of my family were da brits. No more messed up than the average family. Many emigrated to the new world. General mistrust of politicians , flags, ideologies , religions and corporates. A fondness for booze , good food, and a lively conversation. A dislike for lazy scroungers, traffic jams, bureaucracy, bigotry, fundamentalism, ignorance. Nostalgic for living in caves and hunting mammoth.

Background : celt Viking Norman

I'm the poster-boy for floating voters! I consider myself fairly centrist, and I've voted for all of the 3 main parties over the years. I tend to do it on an election by election basis, based on manifesto (although I admit that's published summaries not the whole thing).

I've gone slightly further left as I've got older, because I don't really like what I see today as a "f*** 'em" attitude to certain things. I'm in favour of curbing benefits and returning them to a safety net rather than a lifestyle choice, but against seeing people in genuine poverty through accidents of life.

Upbringing was firmly working class, if I remember right, Dad would vote Tory, Mum Lib, but we never really discussed it in depth.

My dad was a miner and then moved to London and was a docker. A lot of my relatives (many who have passed away due to the dust) came from the Rhondda and the tales I heard about how the wealthy mine owners treated the workers were shocking (and after researching when I was older were true). His mates on the docks were a weird mixture, very left wing in some ways and very right wing in other.

I should add that my mum died when I was very young so I was not really influenced by her politics but her family owned a big garage in Warlingham.

This has made me incredibly suspicious about employers as, if not reined in by certain regulation, I am sure, even today, they would exploit workers to gain more profits for themselves.

There is a flip side to this in the fact that I really do not like the pc stupidity that has happened in the last 20 years or so. My dad told jokes that would probably get him arrested these days and I told these at school and no-one objected. I hate the fact when anyone gets treated unfairly or not equally, that goes for men or women. I think I am quite left wing in most of my views but am edging right in some of them.

What do you think it was about your upbringing that made you convinced the Conservative side was right? You seem to infer that it was partly to do with the strength of feeling in your family, is that so? Where did it come from?

A good number of years ago I was a member of the Labour party and canvassed on their behalf. On the whole it was a decent party that represented the interests of ordinary British working people. Now it is led and populated by crypto-communist agitprop cretins who represent the interests of various ethnic and sexual minorities and show contempt for ordinary British working people.

Correct it doesn't but I have met more than one or two dyed-in-the-wool Tories who are so because it gives them a perception of higher status. Snobs, in short, inverted or otherwise.

Was there a particular part of that period that affected you the most?

Only from 1979 to 1990. Oh, and 1971 when she took away my lovely bottle of daily milk which was a great social part of the day for us at infants school. Bitch.

I was a member of the young liberal democrats and before that the youth part of the liberal party. But I became more interested in critical analysis rather than ideology at college. I'm generally left wing (though not as left wing as you'd assume, but heavily influenced by the anarchist and libertarian positions - far more than I am by Marx and Engels.

My politics really are left of centre (mostly influenced by the ideas of economic fairness likely Keynes rather than free market capitalism) but very anti-authoritarian.

As far as left wing, I'm more inclined towards Emma Goldman, than Marxist-Lennism. Personal freedom is, more important to me, than economics.

I generally avoid politics because it usually becomes more childish than I can cope with.

My politics are left wing because I was raised during the war years and despite what many believe to the contrary a lot of anti Churchill thoughts existed and a socialist government (Atlee)was almost a necessity to deal with so many issues.

I was very much aware of the hardship of being a child of virtual poverty which was also very influential to my life.

Despite being very involved in the capitalist system and holding a well paid managerial position I have always voted for my fellow man and woman...not personal gain.

Honesty which is in very short supply in politics tells me that neither side of the argument is correct.

By and large the wealthy obtain their riches on the backs of working men and women and despite comments to the contrary the class system defines this country.
