One of my all time favourite Palace players. He didn't take any prisoners. I seem to remember Venables introducing players from the youth team 2 at a time. I think Billy came in with Peter Nicholas and remember watching them playing at White Hart lane back in 1977 in a 2-2 draw. He certainly had a short fuse. I remember one evening game when an opposing player did something that infuriated Billy and he stamped his foot right next to the blokes head.

We had a fantastic group of youngsters at that time with the brilliant youth team coach Johnny Cartwright in charge. Many such as Vince Hilaire and Kenny Sansom were influenced by Malcolm Allison and Terry Venables being at the club.

Super memories of him, when i began watching Palace in 1979, when we won the old 2nd Division title. I’m proud to have the very shirt he wore for the final game v Burnley! Attachment: FCAA7236-8ADD-4EA9-A2C9-D89F76789213.jpeg (1,449.21Kb)

That shirt may have been Billy Gilbert's, but that's not the shirt he would've been wearing v Burnley in 79 Edited by monkey (07 Oct 2017 3.16pm) Attachment: IMG_9973.PNG (113.21Kb)

Billy might have worn it sure in the youth but not in 1979. Or he gave you a spare old one Edited by Kermit8 (07 Oct 2017 4.40pm)

What a team!! Those were the days!! A rare thing indeed. Man U in the nineties had 5 and Barca 2008 had six from youth in their best starting eleven. We sh1t em. We had nine on that night in '79. Doris, Kenny, Billy, Vince, Jerry, Peter N, Steve K, Jim and Dave S. The only two not were Budgie and ? Walshy was a sub. Another. Makes 10. Incredible. edit: Walshy did start. Blimey. All 10 outfield players from the seventies youth set up. That must be a record and one we can be proud of for a change. Edited by Kermit8 (07 Oct 2017 5.29pm)
