Burst onto the international scene with real intent, and seemed to go downhill slowly ever since.

Euro - 2004 - at his absolute best (until injury)
World - 2006 - never really fully fit
Euro - 2008 - didn't qualify
World - 2010 - shambles (didn't score)
Euro - 2012 - Suspended for 2 games
World - 2014 - goal against Uruguay only highlight
Euro 2016 - shambles again (didn't score)

If you compared that to Gary Lineker's international tournaments there is no comparison.

You're chalking off his goal in our losing effort to Iceland.

Optimistic as ever

Good riddance to the overhyped granny shagging sack of s***e. Expect him to go down the same path as Gazza in the not to distant future

Peaked as a player very early, never improved beyond 'very good player' to 'world class player'. Not been good enough for England for 2-3 years. Hitting out at fans booing him and the England team (justifiably, after a shockingly poor tournament) in South Africa will always be a black mark against him.

Suspect looking back he'll go down in England folklore as a good player, but not up there with the very best.

Sorry I think he's been perfectly good for England for those 2-3 years, but that merely reflects that England have been sh*te.

What's wrong with granny shagging? I know some pretty 'fit' grannies (in their 40s) although not in the biblical sense.

There's definately a theme with England players

They burst onto the scene and look world beaters then never ever get back to that form.

Same with Owen at 1998, he still had a decent career but was never better than when he was a raw 18 year old

I think the pattern is more that Player X has a good game, the press/fans decide that England will now be the new Brazil/Germany and then when reality inevitably crashes the party (i.e. we pay a tournament knockout game and lose) everyone is confused.

The players can't live up to the hype because the hype is off the charts.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Overhyped?! Yet is the leading goalscorer for both Man Utd and England, when you look at the strikers Utd have that's no easy task. Honestly wonder if people know football at all sometimes..

Failed in tournaments due to either injury or terrible team performances and when you compare that to his performances for Utd it highlights it even more. Big game player, who scored vital goals throughout his career.

I'll agree that Rooney has been rubbish, but so has the rest of the team

Let's be fair, it's definitely more of an 'England' thing than a 'Rooney' thing
