I think maybe the compromise is that if you can be demonstrated to be lying to an independent body, then you could be banned.

Its hard to sympathise with some of the right wingers on Facebook, because they're so aggressively in your face and distributing of thinly veiled hate.

In truth, I think you should only be censored if your regularly attacking other people, trolling, inconsiderate to other users or committing an act that is criminal, liablous etc.

A cousin of mine, regularly posts all kinds of absurd s**t, including accusing Bill Clinton of being a rapist a murderer, holocaust denial, that anyone who has an abortion is a killer, that trans people are mentally ill and not human as well as occasional right wing arguments that are fairly well formed.

I'm surprised he hasn't been banned truth be told, because in between his decent points, are legally questionable content and statements there is a really scary level of thinly veiled hate.

One of the few things I'm increasingly jealous of America for is their first amendment.

I've always respected the laws regarding free speech of 'libel, violence, obscenity'. I've always understood and agreed with these......I'm very suspicious of how May's 'hate speech' laws are...being used here.... by some to attempt to close down the views they don't like.

Companies that significantly stray away and create their own moralities away from the law deserve to suffer for that in the marketplace.

I guess we will see what happens in the next few years.

I don't think they're wrong-think guardians or pursuing a political agenda so much as they're abusing their power for their own selfish reasons - and that's maybe the concern, its about the power over others, which is where the Orwellian aspect comes in. The danger of Big Brother isn't censorship - Its the abuse of power over others, first their behaviour, then their mind and then their lives.

It's all of those things and censorship is a facet of that.
Keep excusing things away is precisely how you arrive at '1984'.
We have to stand up and say enough is enough.

I think people should be free to use platforms and services to express themselves as they see fit, without having to worry about their message being censored. Unless they want a gay marriage message written on a cake of course.

"Free speech" platforms don't seem to exist though, do they?

As pointed out earlier on this thread, the platforms in everyday use are privately owned and are either cabals (traditional media) or virtual monopolies (social media big hitters).

Their toys, their rules. Thought control / 1984 and all that has been a thing for years - why are some people only now railing against it?

My previous message was tongue in cheek, but yes, people ought to formulate a view of what role companies hold in society, what responsibilities and so on. With this and the gay cake debacle both situations are attempts to censor expression and so rationally people should not be passionate about defending the freedoms of business in one instance and the individual in another.

We need to start trying to divorce the point scoring and 'teams' aspect of personal politics and encourage platforms that are more open. Governments only ever use this teams dynamic against the whole population anyway. They don't care whether protections, or rather restrictions, placed on the population are from the left or the right. They just care that they are able to more easily control people.

Personally I'm not averse to shops picking and choosing what service they offer their customers, or sites who they ban or restrict, but it would certainly benefit people to stay away from businesses that do overly or unreasonably police expression, whether that's something they want written on a cake, or a status update. That will encourage platforms that are open to all and damage censorship happy ones.

What a ridiculous comparison.

And no silly billy, lying does not count as censorship.....Kermy I do like you on here....but sometimes..really... If your brains cells were pound coins you wouldn't have enough to pay your rent.

I dunno. Those redacted by their superiors police statements after Hillsborough seemed like pretty much full-on censorship in order to fulfil a lie to me.

And would you like to have a few of my brain cells to even things up?

Unlike extreme left wingers on Facebook?

You know Kermy but you can't continue to compare apples and oranges and then point to a peach and then say it's an apple....Well, actually you as can, as it's free speech....I don't really care what BS you want to talk about.

And Kermy...there isn't an all year round alcoholic bender that's ever existed that would require me to have some of your brain cells.....If I had one of yours you'd be down to a single digit odd number.

Self censorship is a good thing. I think far to many people just spill their opinions out, rather than think about what they're going to say.

I feel for people who have something to contribute who get censored, that's clearly wrong. Of course, I don't really believe humanity is capable of free speech without it turning it immediately into why we should deny other people certain rights.

The great discovery of the Communications Technology era is that people don't have much worth saying.
