I don't know enough about Belarus but Poland yep, excellent government from what I'm hearing....Russia is hard to define in European politics...nationalist certainly...Anyway Poland are doing a lot better job that your 'praised by Corbyn self described socialist run Venezuela.

Labour statement. The way you talk is as if Corbyn is applauding what's happening now. Edited by nickgusset (03 Aug 2017 9.52pm) I don't think that anyone is claiming that a Corbyn led government would treat democracy in the same manner the socialists over there have. It's about how pure socialism destroys wealth and how Corbyn would also turn a relatively wealthy country like ours into a much poorer one. The incentive for investment would go down just as fast as the money would flow out of the country. Many socialists lie to the poor about what is practically possible in the real world as it is. Blair was essentially right about how left wing ideas can only work with capitalism not by treating it like a turd on the street.....I agree with plenty of the ideals of socialism...few don't....the criticisms of capitalism also ring true...they haven't changed much from Marx's day.. but its solutions are often nothing short of disastrous.

Love it - that intellectual giant of the left, Legal, does not know his Allende from his Pinochet!

When was it praised by Corbyn? A few years ago. When the population were well educated, when society was flourishing. Things change and events can change opinion.
You need to look at events from different perspectives and not be myopic. Think not of what you are being told, ask what you aren't being told and why.

Britain is still a world-beater at one thing: ripping off its own citizens Good piece that sums up a few issues facing folks in this country.

The fact remains that the left, as usual, praised the new/old socialist experiment in Venezuela and as usual it has ended in catastrophic failure - very similar to how they lauded Mugabe when he came to power.

Its a monarchy that's ultra conservative and a totalitarian. Its definitely right wing, very authoritarian but its not really a government in the way we mean a government.

It's actually funny that you compare the two. The Polish parliament has recently been trying to alter the constitution by electing members to the Supreme Court themselves, rather than having them as independents. Pretty similar to what's going on in Venezuela. The problem with talking about Venezuela is no one who wants to parade it as a symbol of Socialism gone wrong ever wants to seriously discuss it. Venezuela has a very, very complicated establishment and constitution, with many competing interests vying for position. Arguably, it has never been a Socialist country (the wealth of the richest actually increased under Chavez, even as they were trying to organise a coup against him). Maduro may be a bit authoritarian, but you would have to ask what the alternative is. If Venezuela were to switch to, say, a Columbian style of oil ownership, the social security of millions of its citizens would be eradicated.

Worth a read. U.S gives money to Venezuelan opposition. Now I wonder why so many people have an interest in the so called 'democratisation' of such an oil rich country? Edited by nickgusset (04 Aug 2017 12.48pm)
